My 2018 sienna has the same problem. My dealership says it’s fine but I know they’re lying! I just got it on October 12, 2023.

The door was knocked out of alignment somehow. Took a couple time to get it figured out but the dealer finally got it.

My 2020 Sienna has the same issue and the dealer says it’s not under warranty, and that “I somehow broke it”

FOR EVERYONE TRYING TO FIX THIS - I had the exact same issue as the video above, and I fixed it using a method found in the comments ON THIS VIDEO! So, thank you to "this is stupid" for the suggestion. I took a 10mm ratchet and moved the tail light fixture slightly to the left by loosening the 2 bolts (see picture here - i.imgur.com/0Q1PNJg.png ), pushing it over, then tightening them.

I have had the problem shown in this video intermittently for a few years. I mentioned it to the dealer twice while in for other work, and they could not reproduce it and said they could do nothing for me. I figured it was a faulty sensor or a wiring problem. After reading @pikes comment, I examined the gasket around the door, and sure enough, there were signs of wear and slight abrasions where the gasket would come closest to the left tail light, while the right side of the gasket looked fine. The left tail light assembly was about 3/32" closer to door opening than the right side. Additionally, the tail gate itself is not perfectly aligned and has a slight bias the the left. I loosened the 10mm bolts and nudged the light assembly away from the door opening, So far, so good. Thanks for the tip!

Catherine Bunz The lift gate was out of alignment. The body shop realigned it and it works great.

The lift gate was knocked out of alignment some how. The dealer body shop fixed it.

Kimberly Radachy It was under warranty, the body shop figured it out. Have them check the striker plate and/or the alignment. Hope it helps.

same here I loosened the two 10mm bolts on the left tail light assy attached to the van held it to the left and tightened them again and no more issues

My problem is even stranger. My 2011 Sienna power lift gate will open but when I try to power close the door it just beeps. I tried everything and the door just won’t close on its own.

OMG. Thank you for this post. I had the exact same issue after UHaul installed the wiring for my hitch. UHaul didn’t know how to fix it until they saw this video LOL.

My 2008 has the opposite problem. When I open it, it gets to the top and then comes back down. I almost got pinned by it when leaning inside to retrieve an item. There was a recall on the 2006 models for the liftgate malfunction. I hope yours was covered under the warranty as mine is not.
