Amazing. The part at 2:47 with the tom in from of snare was like what the F? Note perfect - all the way thru! How the amazing Steve Jansen ever came up with this beat and also amazing Asa Young was able to figure it out is incredible. There are no videos showing Steve playing this all the way thru and just snippets. Also, I am pretty sure Japan ran a taped track when they played this live. I had seen Steve had an Otari reel to reel running when they played live on the Old Grey Whistle Test. This is why Steve had headphones on. Very hard for a drummer to do that. My guess is Chinese woman's voice and one of the synth parts were on tape. Richard Barbieri is great but there are a lot of synth parts going on during that song. The whole Tin Drum album was fantastic use by Richard of the Oberheim OBX and Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 synths that had just been created. David Sylvian also did a lot of work with the P5 on the album. What a sad story with Japan. They were a lousy NY Dolls rip off for the first 2 albums. Then get Moroder to do Life In Tokyo which showed how great they could be. Then they just got better and better. Sylvian then busted it up because Mick Karn's girlfriend and Sylvian's supposed stage fright and other personal weirdness. I guess when they did Tin Drum, they reached perfection and could never improve on that. Sad story. Struggle and struggle then finally succeed and break up.

You nailed this drum cover Steve's for drumming in this particular song & its one that he predominantly uses the snare/high hat & bass drum like most drummers but with his own take on how to put them together with the toms... Steve wasnt the usual snare & bass kick drum as he played all over the drum kit & this song is one were he's using a more traditional way to play the drums were as the large volume of his work is his own unique way of trying to play as much of the kit as possible... Obviously im not a drummer so i cant explain it proper but all i know is i feel what Steve does & can pick him out because of the way he played his drum & the late great Mick Karn & you have only hell of a unique rythm section that sounded like no one else as Japan were ahead of their time then & still are today... Every member of that band had their own unique style , at that includes Rob Dean , & Robs contribution should never be overlooked as he too played a huge part in their overall sound... If you listen to their early songs & albums you can definitely hear an odd mixture of something new mixed in with a slice of punk but by the time that faze was over they had reinvented themself as mudicians & David's vocals had a more laid back mature sound to them... I hate to say this but is it going to take the passing of these amazing players before we see in-depth documentaries about one of the UK & the worlds most unique sounding bands... Im not sure what hapoened to Rob when e left then the band split but the rest of the members went in to create even more unique & difficult to place in a specific genre... It was brilliant to see all the members apart from David doing their own thing but Mick/Steve & Richard always collaborated together as much as they could with JBK... Of course David went on ton create some amazing album but at times he spent too much of some of his albums time with instrumentals & though the fan's know what he was like & how he treated the rest of the original Japan member's but these were grown here & couldve easily told him f*ck off but they obviously felt It was better to put up with his BS & stay with David for as long as they could & then split... How Steve couldve still worked with his brother David is beyond me & only those 2 know why they went in to work together once Japan split & even though David was free to be in complete control & work on his own albums with Steve playing drum but he too also worked with the other members... Its sad to think on how that band & those member's put up with but they sure as hell made amazing & unique songs & music during their time on various progress that saw them also team up at different times... RIP Mick Karn .....

Was always & still am a huge fan of Steve's approach & style to drumming combine that with a one in a million , the late great , Mick Karn on fretless bass guitar & you have a very unique & unusual style coming out of the rythm section of the band & Japan are still ahead of their time, even with today's standards... Grear cover of one unique engine room that was the rythm section of " Japan " .....
