You'd think they would have a drive thru rig with cameras that auto image the bodywork so they didn't have to hire some guy with a camera.

Beginning of the video where the car is being loaded onto Amtrak Autotrain is Po 53 (that's what I call any Amtrak train) and how I know that is because I go to Selma and stay there every Saturday night and I see Po 53 coming South passed the Station from Virginia to Florida

We took our car to Perth on the Indian Pacific and our 4WD on The Ghan to and from Darwin. Much cheaper than driving the 4WD. Just lazy with the house car. Well it only cost $100 back then. That's our 4wd on the top level directly behind the engines. It got covered with oil. BAD IDEA. Should have been covered wagons like the Yanks have. facebook.com/philip.rayner.75/videos/vb.100005839301376/1110777215793578/?type=2&video_source=user_video_tab

Good video - I'm taking the Auto Train in a couple weeks. You said it took 50 mins to get your car. Did you pay for the priority unloading? I'm wondering if it's worth it and how much time it would save.. Thanks!
@55chevyguy_steve6 жыл бұрын
CousinLarry211 Hi, no I did not pay for priority unloading...I didn't see the value in saving 20 or 30 minutes.

Interesting. I'm surprised they don't do another video after unloading, for their own protection. What's to stop someone, having video proof their car was fine on loading, then at the destination crashing into a bridge abutment and blaming Amtrak for the damage?
@sylvie13836 жыл бұрын
brat997 The video taken up north would be sent to them if need be. For example, a customer points at a scratch that was there before loading, Amtrak could use the video from up north to protect themselves if needed

Thanks for the video, I'm gonna do that next year for my car in 2018 for VA to FL. Now I understand how they do it but do they park the vehicle then wait until the passengers arrive to Florida to get their vehicle or does the vehicles come first then passengers come last or is it the other way around?
@55chevyguy_steve7 жыл бұрын
You're on the same train as the cars. They uncouple the auto cars when you arrive at the destination and begin unloading them right away. You wait until they call you that your car is outside and ready to go. You can also pay a fee to have your car unloaded earlier than the rest.

05:01 ... did your satellite radio reacquire signal when it popped out of the train, or was the AutoTrain employee fiddling with your radio? Don't remember the radio blaring when you parked or when it was loaded....

Yes, I think he fidled with it because it was off when I dropped it off.

Is it first come first serve on this? And I hope they have something to lock the wheels in place so the cars don't move during transport
@55chevyguy_steve7 жыл бұрын
No, a reservation is required. I don't see anything that ties the vehicle down. You can pay extra for Priority loading/unloading, so you are unloaded within the first set of cars.

Anyone notice the GPS coordinates in the bottom right changing to 0N 0E during the unloading? Lorton Virginia to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean???
@55chevyguy_steve9 жыл бұрын
+kdmq Yes, the metal body of the train car shields the satellite GPS signal. Notice that the location isn't updated once the car enters the cars when loaded. When the car is unloaded it takes a little time before the GPS signal can be re-acquired for the dash cam GPS to figure out where it is, so the location is zeros until that happens. Navigation units will remember their last location when turned off to make re-acquisition quicker, because they can assume which satellites to get a signal from. But th dash cam doesn't remember anything when turned off.

where do you catch this train? what part of lorton, Va?.
Worker must have their favorite radio station locally!
@CastleMr409 жыл бұрын
I hate it when someone drives my car and turns o the radio to a station he/she likes. That is just plain vandalism. It hapens a lot at car washes, where teens are employed.
@mikel95679 жыл бұрын
+CastleMr40 dude, seriously? get a life. First it isn't vandalism. Second, so what? It is a minor inconvience for you. Granted they shouldn't do it but its not that big of a deal, especially considering they are most likely performing a job that your too lazy to do yourself. Don't like it, then wash your own damn car.

Smart that you have a dashboard camera, but that's not can prove any kind of theft. Dashboard cams are only good for capturing accidents and road rage.

Theft? Who said anything about theft? Anyway, there are people that have dashcams mounted inside the passenger compartment for that reason.

That's an amazingly efficient service. There are a handful of similar services in Australia (we call them Motorail) but on nothing like your scale, usually no more than three Motorail cars attached to a long distance passenger train. Thanks for posting.

No, I did not see them tie-down any of the vehicles (except the motorcycles on the dollies). But, you can hear the employe step/put on the emergency brake when he loads the vehicle and shuts off the engine. I'm sure that saves a lot of wear on the vehicle drive-train from bouncing back and forth.
