It's important to get rid of any large pieces as they can get stuck at the bottom and make it look like you have more sand than you actually do.

How do you distinguish the sand from the silt?
@turehupatupaiarehe4002 Жыл бұрын
clay should be almost glossy and sand the largest particles, so more texture :)
@-sol-8350 Жыл бұрын
Everytime that I do a test the lines look super similar, and after 2 days the I only see two lines. Also recently I have consistently gotten 85%+ sand in several different locations. Some locations seem sandy but the latest location I would swear is clay.

Mushroom trays to start seeds plastic pop bottles with small part of the bottom cut and I use them for clotchs. Yogart pots used for potting up pop a couple of holes T the bottom for drainage. The list is endless great to reuse and repurpose

Coconut coir is not necessarily more environmentally responsible than peat moss, if you take the full cysle into account. Making of coconut coir requires a lot of water and often some harmfull chemicals (to the workers), and shipping it halfway around the world, well... Make your own leaf compost, it's not as good as coconut coir or peat moss, but it _is_ good for the environment.

Hi! Am doing a horticulture paper theough Open Polytechnic and they use this video in their course 😊 I'm wondering, if you enclose the seed in a damp paper towel, what is the point of the sphagnum moss? Just to keep it consistently damp? Thx
@karlitobergkamp80823 жыл бұрын
My guess would be exactly that. The moss will create what would be normal soil conditions of cold and wet thus tricking the seed, so once they come out of the cold and get a warm spike in temperature the seed starts its cycle of growing.
@Smilieface2k92 жыл бұрын
I would think the moss would be for moisture too! Hope the paper went well and that you're living a happy life 😊

Where does water come in when starting seeds?????
@helenagracie14653 жыл бұрын
Did anyone get an answer on this?
@RayPoreon Жыл бұрын
You can soak seeds for 1-24 hours before starting in either water or some weak herbal tea solutions. Which helps pick out good seeds, since unviable seeds usually soak and viable ones usually sink. When planted just keep them in moist soil as they germinate.

This spring I found seed pods from a mandavilla plant I left outside over the long and cold winter. I planted them in seed starter and sphagnum moss, put under a grow light but nothing happened. In this case, would the 5 months of cold have killed these seeds? They’re more for a tropical climate.

What’s next step? Why not show growth ? Do all plants require cold stratification?
@gd-f5 жыл бұрын
no, only some species need cold stratification. Some only needs to be planted and can be watered right away, others need this cold stratification process
@nitelite786 жыл бұрын
Does the shell around seeds act purely as a physical barrier to protect the seed during the winter cold period or is the cold period required to change the seed itself? I suspect the seed doesn't need to go through a cold period but the seeds outer shell prevents damage to the seed during a cold period.
@gd-f5 жыл бұрын
the cold is require for the seed itself
