I want healthcare providers to understand the point of view of someone like me. If you want to talk about stigma, I agree anyone who's suffering deserves treatment without stigma, without judgement, without humiliation, and without gaslighting! I understand your video is discussing SUD but no one deserves the stigma attached to either chronic pain or SUD. Chronic pain patients are people who through no fault of their own suffer with chronic pain! Many years ago, I was hit by a drunk driver and spent two years trying to get my life back. Unfortunately, before I was back to good health, I was hit twice in the same accident by an 18 wheeler, let me tell you, I know something about stigma! I'm not an addict, and I don't have SUD. I'm someone who, through no fault of my own, was thrust into a situation no one could ever have predicted. I spent years trying everything western medicine had to throw at me. My husband and I spent our retirement funds trying to find relief. We spent well over $100,000 before I was sent to a pain management doctor. For 3 years I finally had adequate treatment, only to have that ripped away because of the 2016 CDC anti-opioid guidelines. Let me tell you about stigma! The inevitable stigma that now goes hand in hand with people suffering with intractable chronic pain is unavoidable. Chronic pain patients are denied FDA approved opioid analgesics. Chronic pain patients are being trespassed from hospitals and emergency rooms. If chronic pain patients do manage to find doctors who will treat them, they're likely to find that their prescriptions can't be filled because of stigma and shortages. We face humiliation, verbal abuse, they make videos about us and post them on social media, they lie to us and say opioids cause pain. They gaslight us and tell us opioids aren't needed after major surgery. I've had 28 major surgeries and I can tell you, that's absolutely false. Like most chronic pain patients, not once in the 20 years I've been in pain management, have I turned to the streets. In those 20 years, I've had nothing but clean drug tests. I suffer through no fault of my own and I refuse to have the surgeries I need because of the stigma associated with chronic pain, because of the gaslighting, because of the humiliation and stigma imposed on me. My sister had MS and right after the 2016 guidelines were published, her doctor cut her off her low dose single ingredient opioid and the only option he gave her was assisted suicide. She finally couldn't take it anymore and agreed to assisted suicide. And BTW, she didn't live in a death with dignity state. I lost my beloved sister due to the current ignorance surrounding FDA approved prescription opioid analgesics for the treatment of chronic pain. I want to make something abundantly clear, for those healthcare providers who call chronic pain patients drug seekers or addicts, please understand that using that accusation, or label, is completely illogical and utterly ignorant. Chronic pain patients are people who go through the healthcare system to get care, they're people who go for years and often decades have clean urine drug tests. They're people who know absolutely nothing about street drugs. They don't lie, steal, or destroy relationships in order to get their medication. To label someone a drug seeker or addict should be something a chronic pain patient should be able to sue a doctor for. Doctors don't seem to care that by labeling chronic pain patients as drug seekers or addicts, they're singlehandedly destroying someone's life with a label that will follow them the rest of their lives. So next time you talk to any healthcare provider who stigmatizes a chronic pain patient, I hope you'll keep this in mind and educate them. I want people to get whatever treatment they need and deserve without stigma. It's not the job of healthcare providers to label people unjustly. My primary care physician is openly hostile toward me because I'm in pain management. Not once in the nearly 4 years I've seen her has she ever even asked how I became a chronic pain patient. She's vindictive, she's malicious, and has said things and charted things that are patently false. I audio record every single appointment with her because she has lied to me and to my husband in my appointments. I live in a one party consent state, where it's my legal right to record without her knowledge or consent. It's because my husband and I have caught her in lies, that recording her is my only recourse. I know I need to find a new doctor but no doctors will accept chronic pain patients. So, for now I'm stuck. I avoid going to doctors as much as possible because of the politics associated with people who suffer with chronic pain. I'd really like to see doctors fighting for us and fighting the stigma associated with chronic pain. Thank you for your time.
