I owned three Vegas, two 1972 GTs and a 1975 GT. I also owned a 1977 Monza Coupe 305 V8 (auto) and a 1976 Pontiac Astre Stationwagon. My second 1972 Vega Coupe GT, in 1975, I rebuilt the engine with a steel sleeve block and took it to Germany. I drove it for 2 years, until a friend drove it for over an hour, on the autobahn over 100 mph. It caused the #3 cylinder to come loose. That's when I sold it and bought a 1975 Vega coupe GT. In December 1985, I bought the 1976 Astre, with a bad engine. I rebuilt that with a steel sleeved block and drove it for a year, when the automatic trans went out. I then took a crashed 1979 Monza stationwagon's V6 engine/auto trans and all the drivetrain and front end and transplanted into the Astre. It was a good little runner for a number of years.

I came minutes away from buying a white '73 Pontiac GrandAm/Can Am with a 455cid automatic with the Hurst package. $3000 was the asking price in around '86. Haven't seen another one since. I knew it was rare then, because the trunk had an engine displacement decal on it of 7.5 litres. Woulda, coulda, shouda.

The Can-Am was cancelled mid-year because the tooling for molding the rear spoiler broke. The repair to the tooling was estimate to be around $75K. Pontiac didn't approve the repair and the Can-Am was no more.

I had two CanAms! One had a Pontiac 400 and the other one didn't have an engine or transmission when i bought it so I put in a small block Chevy 350 4bbl, 4 bolt main with a General Kinetics cam with .454" lift / 270 duration and a T-350 with a B&M transpak, Hedman Headers, cherry bombs and 3 73 gears. It was a badass car and I had a lot of fun in it back in the late 80's!

There was a 'Wagon' version of that Rallye 350, in the VISTA CRUISER Line. You could Opt that Motor, in a , Family Tow Package, and, It came with Stiffer Rear Springs! Hello! What My Mama drove (b-4 going to Saab model 99's for a decade).

Cosworth Vega actually ran at 120HP on Leaded Av-Gas (10 octane, green stuff), and was a 'sorted'(by '70's standards) ride that featured KYB shocks, and decent BFG Radial tires. My saab model 99, of that era, could still out-handle it, but, not, straight-line out-run it. Considering it's Parents, it was a 'Fast-assed Kid'.

Back in 85 i was 18 and a guy I worked with had a Can Am i don't know year seems like it had a 400, he goes and buys a nitrous kit for it, we knew less than nothing about nitrous, next week he gets to work very excited about his power increase and all the cars he had outrun, anyway i knew him for about another 2 years and ran the ever living hell out of that thing, i guess the lower compression may have helped

A buddy of mine that I hung out with in the mid to late 80’s had a Can Am. But the car having lived in a high salt use state was looking pretty sad, it had the rust bug bad, about 10” up into the fenders and doors. It was a shame cause it was a sharp looking car

Should’ve included the 73-74 Pontiac Firebird with the Super Duty 455. These are extremely rare especially the Super Duty Formula Firebirds. Pontiac built one of their fastest cars to kick off the malaise era. One of the very few times Pontiac was able to sneak one passed GM that beat the Corvette. Also didn’t mention the 89 Turbo Trans Am. It shared basically the same engine as the GNX but with better flowing heads in a lighter and better handling car.

@mikee29236 күн бұрын
Your 455 4 speed Grand Am wasn’t stock. In a 1st Gen Grand Am, 455 option was only available with a Turbo 400 automatic. A 400 4bbl was the top engine available with a 4 speed. All were available in 2 or 4 door.
@tragiclife97606 күн бұрын
@ laughable, there were no 4 door Grand Am in 75, and since I bought it new, it was factory stock with a 455 and Muncie, guess again
@mikee29235 күн бұрын
@@tragiclife9760 Hopefully you still have it because it’s a 1 of 1. More like 1 of none. According to Rocky Rotella, noted Pontiac historian, there were a total of 0 Pontiac Grand Ams built between 1973 to 1975 equipped with a 455 and a 4 speed manual transmission. There was 1 Grand Am built in 1973 with the LS2 455, better known as the SD455. It was an automatic. There were a total of 1,041 Grand Ams built in 1975 that were equipped with the L75 (455 4bbl). All were equipped with the M40 (turbo 400) automatic transmission. 897 of them were 2 door coupes and the other 144 were 4 door sedans. The M20 4 speed manual transmission was dropped for the 1975 model year. Not the 4 door sedan. There was a total of 1893 4 door Grand Ams built in 1975. 1259 equipped with the L65 400 2bbl. 490 were built with the L78 400 4bbl. 144 were built with the L75 455 4bbl. I’ll take Rocky’s word. As far as I know, 1974 was the last year for Muncie 4 speeds at GM. After that they used the Borg Warner Super T10 4 speed manual.

@ I love statistic guys, you search he the internet and you’re an expert , I’m 71, if you really know about old GM cars then you know some weird shit got through, ever seen a 68 firebird with a 428 ?? I knew 2 guys that had them , how about a 69 Camaro with 396/375 with Air conditioning? Back then it was who you knew to get oddball combos , they called it COPO, central office production order, not all dealers had the ability to order them, but the ones that did , did
@mikee29235 күн бұрын
@ Chevy was about the only one who did and was able to get away with the COPO cars. Pontiac was never allowed. In fact, for 1968 when Hurst came to GM to build a car that broke the rules, the result was the Hurst Olds. A 455 in an A body. Hurst’s original intent was to build 68 Firebirds with the 390 horse 428 HO. But GM outrightly refused to allow that to happen because a 428 HO Firebird would’ve been too close in performance to the Corvette. I’m not saying it was impossible but everyone claims to have had something like that. 428 HO GTO, LS6 454 Kingswood station wagon with a 4 speed and 4.56 gears, etc. Having the dealer install a 4 speed in a 455 Grand Am is totally believable. Or swapping out a 400 4 speed equipped with a 455. But if it indeed came from the GM assembly line so equipped, hopefully you still have it along with some documentation. It would be worth a fortune.
