Do you by chance have an idea where I might find sheet music for another of Nordqvist's songs, i.e. music set to the words of _"Psaltare och lyra"?_ (as sung by Håkan Hagegård) I can't find it in the usual places... (paper or online)

Unfortenately, the sheet music is not available. This version has been specially authorized by the composer for us.

The lyrics written for this anthem in 1940 were prophetic. Thank you, Svanholm Singers, for your fantastic rendition, with the original words which are rarely heard on the world stage. Your pronunciation was perfect. Bravo.

The song tells a story about the "king" lily of the valley in the forrest, who mourns the princess lily of the valley! Here's a rough translation of the text: King Lily of the valley is white as snow, now the young king is mourning the maiden princess Lily of the valley. King Lily of the valley is lowering his sorrow-ful head, so heavy and weak, and his silver helmet shines pale in the summer twilight. Around the spider's web of the bier from the incense plates with flower powder a resin incense slowly floats, the whole forest is filled with scent. From the swaying crown of the birch from the rocking green house of the wind little songs of sorrow are sounding, the whole forest is filled with sighing. A message is whispered through the little valley about royal mourning among whispering leaves, in the wide realms of the forest from the capital of the lilies of the valley.

Thank you! We tried to stay as close to the original as possible but obviously had to sing some lines an octave lower. We're craving for more TTBB-rep to come from the man, haha. 🥰

Wonderful piece and wonderful singing! Would it be possible to share with us the lyrics and their meaning? Thanks!
@raineruibo22032 жыл бұрын
Dear Virginie, this is an Estonian folk song about the desire for freedom. The composer (Mart Saar) had collected many folk songs to become choir songs, but this is maybe the most famous one. This song has been often sung at Estonian National Song Festivals (you can find them in KZbin), even in the Soviet period. Therefore, this song has two versions of lyrics - in the present and the past tense. Original is in the present tense (and during the Soviet era in the past tense, of course). Lee-lo is a refrain and does not mean anything, like Sami joiku or Alpine jodel. My poetic skills in English are questionable, but as a native Estonian I did my best: Lee-lo ..... Why do these reins keep us Why do these ropes bind us Lee-lo .... Why do these ropes bind us These ties which strap us Lee-lo .... We long for to escape from the yoke [And] get free from slavery ============================================= Original language (in present tense): Lee-lo .... Mis need ohjad meida hoidvad Mis need köied meida köitvad Lee-lo .... Mis need köied meida köitvad Sidemed, mis seovad meida Lee-lo ... Ihkame ju ikkest lahti Orjusest ju päästa vabaks. ------ "Mis" is a reduced word for "Miks" ("why") in everyday language
