I have mixed feelings about Sykes. On one hand, the guy's got a lot of menace, is the catalyst for Fagin's moral conflict (which ultimately caused me to really like the guy), he controls pretty much all the characters until the last 10 minutes, making him an ever present threat and there's a cold-blooded heartlessness to virtually everything he does. That scene where Fagin tries to pitch his catnapping plan and Sykes just has his dogs try to maul him alive was brutal. I imagine this movie feels like a psychological horror from Fagin's pov cuz of this guy. But I can't shake the idea he makes a lot of dumb decisions in this movie. For example: why is he loaning Fagin money in the first place? Fagin is clearly broke to the point of starvation and is feeding 5 dogs, so why would you genuinely expect giving that guy a massive loan wouldn't be a waste of time and money? Why would you genuinely expect to get that money back? Cuz that is what motivates him right? He wants the money, it's not like he's exploiting Fagin's debt to get free labor or anything, nor is he super sadistic with the poor guy, a lot of their interactions indicate that he's more disinterested and aggravated with Fagin, this is a chore to him. And it's not like cowardly clumsy Fagin is exactly super smooth-talking or convincing (I CANNOT see Fagin manipulating Sykes, like I really can't). Soooo why loan this man so much money in the first place and waste more time and money to give him chance after chance when ya could just kill him? Also, cool as the subway scene is, that was really dumb of Sykes. Like, honey, you know where Fagin and Jenny live and they can't get far with no money for gas. Surely there's a safer when to handle that situation outside of GOING ON THE TRAINTRACKS IN THE DIRECTION OF A TRAIN. Overall Sykes is a scary character but he's far from the smartest Disney villain and I struggle to find the logic behind his actions.
