I love finding these old videos to watch because I too was in the Carthage Bulldog band. My sister was too but she graduated in 1962 & she was a majorette & played clarinet. I was in 1966, played in the drum line. I marched with the cymbals usually. I believe Mr. Sam Burks was our band Director & I am pretty sure Mr. C.J. Lambert was her band director. We moved due to our mothers death but I always loved Carthage High School. I sit here sometimes & just watch videos. I always loved the military style of marching & military music.❤❤

I grew up in Carthage which is very close to Henderson so I remember this band well. I was in the Carthage Bulldog marching band, marched with cymbals but played drums. This was in the early 60's. I love watching bands I knew, thanks!

Saw this for the first time today, and I have to say that I am blown away by the complexity of this drill! I have charted drills in 6-5 when I was a senior at Nacogdoches HS in 1985-86. Spent all summer on my living room floor with charts everywhere setting my drill to Under The Double Eagle! Wanted a bit of flash so I thought that I had some nice places for pins and gates. Mr. Hagood didn't know I was charting a drill so when I brought it to him at the beginning of August, he looked at it and was amazed! He said, "It's too hard, son! We only have nine weeks to contest and this would take 12 to teach! But I gotta say, there's people who fail this class in college and here you are with no instruction whatsoever?" He did honor me by using the walkout on the fanfare of Double Eagle! I was busy that year... was going to try out for drum major but I was made percussion section leader, which was almost as good. Wrote the NHS cadence that they've been playing variations of for almost 40 years! I really did want to become a band director, but it just wasn't meant to be. I did, however get to do some percussion coaching in Ark City, Kansas in 1996. Walked with the HS band during the K-State Central States Marching Festival that fall, and it was the closest I got to being a director! Everyone else was shaking my hand like I was the man! Must have been the suit! Looking at this drill from 1970, I just cannot imagine there being a school district willing to give the time and money it would take to teach this kind of precision in this age. Heck, they don't even practice as much as we did in the mid 80s! And as far as charting! If I could have seen this back when I was 16, I maybe could have figured it out in 8 months. I'm 54 now, with ADD and executive brain dysfunction. It'd take me years to chart that by hand. I'd be too distracted trying to watch more videos for reference!

This is the one and only time out of about 50 times I've seen Nederland that they've had an interesting drill and interesting music. This is quite good. Clearly they had a different director back when this was made -- it looks almost like something Charles Smith might have designed for the classic Vidor bands. It's a shame whomever the current Nederland director is can't design something interesting for all the talent they have. It seems their only care in today's world is getting a 1 at UIL no matter how dull the drill and music is/are.
@ryanmetts434
@ryanmetts434 9 ай бұрын
The only care the directors at Nederland have is educating students. Military Bands Automatically lose points at the Area and State Level so they cut ties and focus on All-Region and concert band.
@user-zu9pz3ys7u
@user-zu9pz3ys7u 8 ай бұрын
@@ryanmetts434 military bands now have a separate competition for state they also do not compete at an area competition because of the small amount of military bands and I don’t know if you understand that when writing drill for bands specifically military bands there’s only so many drills that can be done and if you were a director or if you even tried writing drill you would know that there are only so many different marches and fanfares that are good and written for HIGH SCHOOLERS also there was so many mind bending or “entertaining” drills in the 1900s because you could punch a kid in the face for not hitting the yard line correctly and imagine what they did if kids couldn’t make the maneuvers the director was telling them about and Nederland has about 65 available videos on anything so the 50 interesting drills really is not a good point

They sure have a nice stadium for that band to play in! That is incredible for a high school, especially back in the 70s! I really miss traditional military bands like this. Even the few military groups still out there today are different; most of them try to include some corps style maneuvers or sounds. Either that or they are really boring -- it seems most people have forgotten that precision military bands can be extremely entertaining and interesting since today's all use the same basic countermarches instead of the clever formations in this video. Thanks for posting this -- I miss the days when bands routinely used the marching philosophy in this video.

They have a very strong bass line! I LOVE that! And even though I've watched this video several times before, I just now noticed what a good blend they have, no matter which direction they're facing -- and us marching band folk know how important the direction you're facing is! Whoever wrote this drill did a fine job with the music and musicians and instrumentation he had to work with! 👏🏿👏🏻👏🏾👏🏼👏🏽
