Made in USA for jazz guitarists and accordion players. Most jazzers played archtops and most guitar players of all generas back in the day preferred hollowbodies or semihollows. Since 1968, few tube amps have been designed for Gibson jazz guitars and such like this one had been. The (so called) jazz guitarists that came around afterwards since the 1970s seem to mostly go either of 2 directons, to super gained up fusion amps or wimpy solid state amps. The Ampegs, somewhere in between the 2 extremes, were completely forgotten as a jazz master amp for archtop players. And, here and there, a few rockers and popsters pick one up, defeating the beauty of long lost hollow body guitars even futher.😮

I have a 90s super rocket,Apart from being so heavy its a lovely clean sounding amp,Problem is,I switched it on last week and No sound. All lights up as usual but silent .Could this be an expensive fix?output transformer perhaps?.Really gutted its died on me. one of the best clean tones and a reverb to die for.

I have a 90's Ampeg as well that stopped working. Try plugging into the effects loop return to see if it is preamp or power amp only. I found my preamp tubes are not warming up, I saw a video of reverb rocket work on here somewhere and it was just a diode failure causing no sound. Good luck, they do have the schematics on their website for all that 90's stuff still.

I bought an SS-35 back in '88 and played it with a band... the lead guitarist was playing a JCM800 through a 4x12, so I couldn't really compete. I left it at my folk's place and my dad threw it out thinking it was junk (it had a rip on the front) a number of years later. It was a really solid and reliable amp.

These are good amps and you can get them for cheap! I bought a SS35 today at a pawn America for $97. Like brand new with the stock custom speaker and footswitch. When I got home and played, it was much better sound quality than I expected! Good deep warm distortion tones! As long as you don't max out the treble/presence or gain(s). I am getting a nice round tubey tone. And excellent cleans! Running a bit of phase and chorus between the clean/dirty channel. Its not high end like my JCM 2000 DSL100 but its a super cool amp for being solid state! Very chunky and open sounding with the alnico pickups in my les paul. Sounds just like Aerosmith Rocks albulm!

***** I often regret selling mine. I'd grab it up again if I found it for the right price.

You can actually get it really distorted. With two gain stages, it's actually a bit ridiculous how distorted it gets if you crank both. Still have it for sale, if you're interested-- long story but I ended up with it again after selling it a while back.

I'm interested in seeing how much chrunch you can get out of this. I play mostly metal. Is this more of a vintage sounding amp?

I have the SS 140 c Prototype .A friend of mine worked at st Louis music and he built it back in 87 right before they went on the market. I still have it to this day .its a very reliable i never had any problems ever.I think it is a bummer that they didn't make very many of them and they are so underrated

Any one who comes across one of these little high gain monsters get it! I recently got mine a couple months ago and its the best amp i've ever owned. Don't be fooled by its size its hella loud even with a hard hitting drummer doing blast beats..

No, I checked the history of when it was made, as well as matching the serial number. It's been a while, but I think the first year of production was '88 or '89. I can't remember what the last year was. Sold the amp a while back. Next Ampeg amp to go will be a Super Echo Twin ET2B.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought these were an early 2000s model, not mid 90s. I have the same exact model, thats why i'm interested...

Hey, good to hear from you. I had a GIbson burgundy studio, which I loved the sound of, it was just too darn heavy. Ended up with the Schecter, which is lighter. The Ampeg is now listed on Ebay, and has a bidder, so you'll need to fight it out with him. I often have restored Fenders, right now it's just the Twin Reverb. I've got a Fender Supersonic I'm working on right now, we'll have to see how it comes out. You can reach me at [email protected], or go to my website mjamps.com
