I've had to completely switch to wire when trolling ballyhoo up in NJ on the midshore lumps. The amount of cut offs I had 3 years ago literally killed me mentally. I had 4 wahoo over 50lbs bite me off at the gaff in a 2 week stretch. It doesn't affect my catch rates at all when it comes to Mahi and bluefin and yellowfin either. Once the water gets one about 68 I have to switch from mono or I'm going to lose fish. It's been a hard lesson to learn but it's been deadly. I run ballyhoo off everything. All my spreaders and trackers I add a skirted bally instead of the factory lures. I usually add a longer leader than the usual stinger as well. And it slays. My most effective lure is usually my shotgun 18in splash bar with the skirted ballyhoo usually in a pink glow. I find a 5 rod spread is most effective. Anymore and it causes problems especially when solo. Tracker either side shotgun splash bar and 1 on a flatline and a Nomad or squidtrex opposite that. 6 to 8mph. Anything will eat all of it. I've gotten some monster threshers on the Nomads pulled like that. Usually by the tail 😆 🤣 😂

Very cool. Painful with they do it at the boat. I mix it up now, ballyhoo all get wire, then 2 are "high risk". In ballyhoo we trust 100%. The UV hair, pink glow is a killer. Keep cracking hoo skulls!

Gate keepers and secrets - Boat Capt.'s aren't the only ones who have to deal with these spot thieving people. There's a lot of you tube anglers who have to deal with "fake people" who act like they're your buddy just because they watched a few videos. They're sneaky, some are even pushy, some will sit for hours on a vid comparing it to google earth but the fact remains that they feel entitled to the info gathered by your hard work over the years. I've run into a bunch of them in my time and it's sad to see them looking for an easy way and not truly learning what each area is about. Just my 2 cents and if it ain't right I expect change!

We just had a sick bunch of big Mahi in NJ in the canyons yesterday. We had fish to almost 30lbs in 67 degree water 😆. Every pot we pulled up on had hundreds under them. Trolling between pots we were banging 60lb yellowfins. Unfortunately for us it's a 90 mile one way ride

It’s every where. We left from down that way years ago. We’re third gen from homestead Miami area. I was done twenty years ago moved the family north. Stuart and Sebastian area the nice thing was before Covid we could run out and not see another boat north of fort pierce for hrs now it’s starting here like down there. Gaurd your numbers and they will produce for ever. When we want the island feel we run east rather than back south to the keys. It’s gotta be bad down there now. Last time in largo /marathon area it was a zoo.
