Gibson later said that Davis stealing Second made him relax even more knowing that all he needed to do was a base hit.

Was a big A's fan back then. This was one of the most devastating moments in my spectating life. What set me off was the walk to Davis. How can you not challenge him. One of the great relievers entering his best years. 72 ip and only 11 walks in '88. He ain't Babe Ruth. Pitch to him for Gods sake. After that Gibbys homer seemed inevitable. Kiss my as....

Great job, Kirk! I saw Kirk play in Lansing, Michigan in the fall of 1977....football not baseball. He was a great receiver for the MSU Spartans in college football.

I was 14 at the time time and watched this entire series tensely. I still can't believe A's blew game one. I think this game broke them psychologically for this series. Vin Scully did the play by play by as perfectly as it can be done. Said little but spoke when needed and quiet when needed. Legendary call

From Michigan State University and a former Detroit Tiger, he is now an announcer for the Detroit Tigers. He played football and baseball and could have played professional football. They say he kept order in the locker room. Not the God but one of the gods😊

No, it was for 3 minutes and 10 seconds that Scully said nothing!! Name one broadcaster who would have done that. And then he says the perfect words to sum up the moment-“In a season that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened!” Sports broadcasting at its finest.

I agree with all the comments and replies. The Absolute Best Home Run in MLB History, and in The World Series on a 3 - 2 Pitch and in Bottom of 9th Inning, down by 1 Run, with a 2 Run Home Run. And of Course The Greatest Sports Announcer of All Time, Mr Vin Scully. 36 years later, I still get goose bumps. Wow what a great At Bat. HOME RUN. Go Dodgers.

I remember watching this game with my mom and OMG I almost couldn't believe it , Kirk. Gibson with 2 bad legs and when he hit that homerun just strutted round the bases , won the game and the A's were in shock . Millions of people watching and loving every bit of it. Vin Scully was amazed and rightly so . I'll never forget that game , I was 33 then , and I just turned 70 , Go Dodgers .

The gamesmanship of not having Gibson come out until Davis got the walk so he could take a few extra seconds to warm up with the crowd roaring. Genius move by Lasorda. The multiple time outs Gibson used. Fouled off pitches. They worked Eckersley as good as they could.

I have never understood why this is such a historic moment. A dramatic end to game one to be sure but baseball, including world series, are rife with many more dramatic moments.
@RussCR5187
@RussCR5187 Ай бұрын
The situation, the hobbled hero, the drama at the plate, and the artistry of the announcer all came together at that moment. This kind of moment is the antidote to the "Where were you when the plane hit the tower?" kind of moments. Both bring us together in a way, but joyful is infinitely better than sorrowful. It's a shame that today's world has gotten so dominated by "sorrowful".
@cowebb2327

@@RussCR5187 I got all that. Joe Carter 1983 walk off home run to win the world series for the Blue Jays, Bill Mazeroski, 1960 walk-off home run to beat the Yankees. Both far more dramatic, far more impactful. Neither of those are replayed, much less endlessly.
