I don't know if this ball was up or down. However Gohar has lost all my respect. Not admitting to being hit by Sobhy's ball. Not shaking Rowan Elaraby's hand after being beaten by her. She is all smiles and sweetness when winning but if she is on the back foot it's a different story.

don't expect Gohar to give anything away, even that. Ref needs to get eyes checked and stay focused on the game.
@prophetssquashstuff85306 ай бұрын
In fairness to the ref, sometimes something happens so quickly that you're uncertain as to what you think you might have seen. Unless you're initially absolutely certain that something's happened then as a ref you take your cue fromt the instant reaction of both players who are obviously closer to the action. The process: If neither player indicates that something happened then you let the rally play out. If Sobhy had won the rally and simply continued with the next point without comment then no harm done. If Sobhy had immediately indicated that something happened then you play out the rally to see the outcome. In this instance Sobhy lost the rally and didn't appeal any lack of call so accepted the outcome of the rally. If Sobhy had appealed then the video review would overturned the outcome of the rally. All the above is predicated on the ref being uncertain that something happened. If the ref was 100% certain that the ball had hit Gohar then he should have called a stroke.

I disagree entirely with all the comments blaming Asal here. He checked where Masotti was so he knew what to play. Massoti was going around him to get back to the T, but before he managed to get there Asal played it and it forced Masotti to get to the ball using the same path as he came from, as he was not able to get back to the T. Asal cleared the T for him, but Massotti decided to go behind him and hit his calf. There were so many similar incidents on the highest level and no one was blaming deliberate movement. Yes, Asal behaved in the past, but in this instance, you are just biased toward him.

Asal has a bad record, but he was moving back to the middle. Where was he supposed to go?
@prophetssquashstuff85306 ай бұрын
@paulrichardson635 The rules allow only for a reasonable follow-through after which "a player must make every effort to clear". Asal completed his very short follow-through well before the ball came back to him. Then he deliberately stepped backwards, firstly with his left foot then his right. in doing so he failed to clear. He could have have stayed still. He could have moved forwards towards the T. He chose to move backwards, obstructing Masotti's access to the ball. The slow-mo clearly shows all of this.

After he hits the ball instead of.moving to the T he moves away from the T into Masotti. Cheating, simple as.

With normal players, in a normal match, the Masotti would ask for a let before swinging at the ball, before the Asal steps back. And probably get given a stroke. But with these guys, under orders to make every effort to play the ball..... Masotti has to go for it, Asal has to clear... he gets that wrong, then the ref gets it wrong. In this instance, thats it. Just mistakes. Does it happen again? And again? I don't know... I can't bring myself to watch any more.
@tonytan59456 ай бұрын
Asal is paying the price for many years of dirty play. Taking this single rally on its own, I actually think if it was any other player, benefit of doubt that he thought massotti would choose the left to front line rather than back to right line. It looks like massotti ran into Asal’s calf and would be a let with anyone else. With asal however, people will assume he conjured all of that up deliberately and you can’t blame them. Now asal should go the other extreme and give his opponents a freeway to get through in order to pay for his sins.

I'm also confused about the original "no let" decision. I don't understand the current PSA thinking on these. You basically trip on a person and then your racket contacts the ball, so how can anyone doubt you've been hindered and were capable of playing the ball considering the ball hit your racket? The PSA seems to have decided that there is a "correct line" to a ball that you must take or you can't have a let - I don't recall where I saw that in the rulebook. Even if Asal hadn't moved backwards and had even tried to move forward and left I don't see how it still isn't a let.

Only the ref knows why he made his original "no let" decision.🤔

What's so sad about this is that Asal does not need these dirty tactics in order to win. He's so incredibly talented that he would still be one of the top 2 or 3 players on earth playing totally cleanly and fairly. Maybe even number 1.

The rear view shows how Massotti ran to the wrong side and after that he hit the leg of Asal with the knee triying to get back. This was a clear mistake of Massotti, not from Asal
@robbinburns63296 ай бұрын
No because there is simply no reason for Asal to step back there immediately after hitting. Also, Masotti didn't run to the "wrong side", he set up slightly to the left and behind which he figured was optimal for view and reaction and split stepped, then immediately moved right out of the split step. There was no mistake, just interference.
@prophetssquashstuff85306 ай бұрын
@Nautilusgen Your attempted explanation misses out the bit where Asal takes two steps backwards. Had Asal even stood still, following his loose shot, Masotti would have been able to play the ball.
@Nautilusgen6 ай бұрын
@@robbinburns6329 The reason is that Asal made a not so good drop shot, so the ball is bouncing to him and he is giving some space, just a little. Assal looked to Massotti before his shot, but after his shot he is only looking the ball and Massotti changed from left side to right side very quickly behind Asal.
@Nautilusgen6 ай бұрын
@@prophetssquashstuff8530 I think that the loose shot of Asal explains his two little steps backwards. He was taking space from the ball wich was bouncing towards him and not trying to get in the way of Massotii. That is my opinion

Didn’t massoti say it was a clean game of squash after the game
@robbinburns63296 ай бұрын
Yeah, I mean I just watched Elshorbagy vs Coll (from the previous World Championship?) and concluded Elshorbagy was playing dirty because he was simply hitting and returning his lunge leg back to neutral but then making no additional attempt to clear (rules say after striking you must make every attempt to clear - I interpret that to mean standing there isn't sufficient). This resulted in just enough interference that Coll was tripping everytime he tried to go by. So what we see from Asal in this case is a whole additional layer of unfair play where he doesn't just fail to clear but actually moves further into his opponents path. And he's been doing that since he came out of Junior so it is pretty obvious by now.
