Oh, I was ready to lose ~20K or so a year on it. But 95K in my first year? Ooof. (HopYacht removed the 5K shipping subsidy when I said I wanted to sell it, they said it was a loan and wanted their money back at sale. I'll talk about it in my final video on the subject) 13 people?!?!? I suppose it isn't rated for coastal cruising, tri toon won't take a 5' wave on the beam, while under sail. But still, horrible constraints for a sailboat.

@ZeroFun

So, the only thing in writing that I think I could sue over, is the bottom paint. They should have fully repaired that, but then we'd have to get experts to do reports, set a court date, hop they pay the 10 grand in lawyers fees, plus 2 or 3 extra for the bottom paint job. It would be a stressful year or two during that, while trying to sell the boat. I've sued manufactures before, it's a nightmare. :( Going from 1 month ahead of expected delivery, to 3 or 4 delayed, the contract says it's okay, as long as they notify me each month. They didn't put much in writing, everything was over WhatsApp calls, I don't think they made the appropriate notifications per the contract, but it would still be difficult to prove. Shipping costs weren't in the contract, they just said verbally it's 4-8K for shipping, closer to 4K if we can wait a week or two for a cheaper delivery window, and if we weren't in a busy seasons. Few hundred or import dues, 1K or so for assembly. Hell, 5K discount on the 29K shipping costs, they said was a loan, after the call where they said it was a discount to thank me for helping them with the battery and everything. Nothing in writing on that either. I hope the new owner sails the crap out of it fast, before the full warranty expires. Need to find all the little things that suck on it that they need to fix, since it's only got 3 months or so left on the warranty. I'm sure there's going to be a LOT of other issues.

@@ZeroFun Was thinking of one more thing too that you mentioned and that was the automatic bilge pumps. It would be a simple matter to install float switched right next to your electric bilge that if you started to flood and lifted the float it would both start the pump, and sound a buzzer or something. Just an idea if you ran into this situation again.
@ZeroFun
@ZeroFun 8 күн бұрын
I don't have any electric bilge pumps. :D They only included manual ones in each bilge. Pumps with float switches are being installed by the new owner, I had to give him a big chunk of change. Just had to get rid of it, couldn't take this stress anymore. I'll do one more, finally video, explaining how everything ended, in my second year of ownership.

I dont understand the manual pump story? Automatic bilge pumps are not expensive, sometimes even cheaper than manual ones?
@ZeroFun
@ZeroFun 8 күн бұрын
I think I have this figured out. They have crash bulkheads in the front of each hull. If it runs into anything, water won't sink the hulls. The motors each have their own wells, so even if those leak or fall off, it won't sink the boat, just fill up the well. You can actually replace them without pulling the boat out of the water. BUT, the keel bolts are in the middle of the hull. So if you're like, I think it was hull 002, and a keel or keels fall off, water comes in and you're manually pumping while trying to get back to the marina. Also, they were designed without AC, but when they tried to sell in Florida, they had major pushback and had to add AC. That put more holes in the boat, once again, in an area with no automatic bilge. So, I think they thought they were designing an unsinkable ship, and there was no need for pumps. (forgetting that leaking hatches happen, apparently mine had a broken strut and other issues)

Yup, all the videos on the HopYachts are non-owners talking it up. No owners sharing their experiences, or anyone actually sailing one and giving an objective review of its positives and negatives. I don't think there's actually any videos of one being sailed, outside of company released footage... It's tough, because I'm sure this doesn't help the few current owners that are struggling with one. But yeah, some of us assumed basic safety measures were in place and didn't notice the fine print. Hopefully it helps potential future owners know what they're getting themselves into.

They disclose everything to the potential buyer. Yeah, I had the same thoughts. Insurance won’t total it. Builder needs to fix stray electrical issues, if the boat is eating itself. Factory responds in the next video, but only to items the buyer wants fixed. I lost a freak’in pile on this boat.

@@ZeroFun Those look a whole lot like a regular old stock 12 volt battery which are rated for 36 or 48 volts max and something like 300 amps. There should be a primer\barrier coat applied first so the anti-fouling paint has something to stick to so it doesn't fall off so easy, At my marina we get 1-2 years out of almost every $200-$250 gal can of ablative paint we have tried.

They’re Balancell 48V packs. Two of them, each 300 amps at 48V. Several hundred pounds each. They didn’t spring for the ePropulsion marine rated packs, but went with a local South African manufactured industrial vehicle packs to save money, then tried to make it withstand the corrosion of the sea. That caused a lot of problems for earlier owners. (They corroded still and lost all power) Ah, gotcha. Man, I mostly operate in brackish water and my paint lasts years. I wish this paint lasted a year, 6 months in the water with professional cleaners the company recommended and it’s wrecked. Like you said, seems like they skipped a coating under it. :(

A new car drops, depreciates, in value the second it leaves the sales lot. Same with a boat. Buy used/pre owned boat. My best estimate is 1 year depreciation in a car equals 7 yrs on a boat and 10 years on a house, the structure not the land. So this means, approximately, that a 15 (2010) to 21 (2004) year old boat is still "new" roughly equal to a 2-3 yr old car. At this age, buy the boat and you have a calculated chance of selling it for the price that you had bought the boat. Depending on how well previous owners had kept the boat, a very good deal can be purchased. A pre-buy survey can catch a lot of items good or bad. I used to cringe at paying a surveyer for pre-purchase, but I prefer my own inspection & 2 separate independent surveys because different eyes catch different things and they will agree on a lot, especially the major details.

Model Y was released. People started flipping them for +20 or 30K, because supply couldn’t meet demand. Scalers ordered them and caused regular consumers MONTHS of delays if they wanted one. Imagine you had one arriving next week and decided you didn’t want it. Your “used car” isn’t going down in value, because there’s massive demand and supply can’t meet it. Taking 9 months to build and ship, I thought there was enough demand, per the company, that it would sell quickly and I’d break even, since someone would get a boat new off the boat, 8K cheaper than ordering one, and 9 months faster. The demand was a lie, so everything fell apart. Yes, as it sad, it was apparently to buyers, there was no demand. The real value of a HopYacht after broker costs is nearly 100K under their new price that includes shipping. Survey results come out in a video this Friday. Potential buyer didn’t get scared off, but broker and surveyor had serious concerns.

I’d say you’re pretty accurate in your calculations. Here in Michigan a 12 yr old boat is like buying a 2 yr old car. Freshwater and a short season. I bought my first boat new. I’ve had five since all used and have not lost money. Aside from fuel, dockage etc. I always buy from an experienced, older boater who takes care of his stuff.

Closer to 4K since there was flexibility on when it went out. I suspect the problem was, no one wants the liability of assembling an electric catamaran from two cargo containers. Hence the only quote they could find for assembly was 20K, and I couldn’t even get a place that dealt entirely with electric boats to assemble it. It’s 300K base now, but includes what I assume is shipment fully assembled and a cleaning at the destination. Or maybe not cleaned, buyer gets to do that to save them money. Lol

@@ZeroFun Fair enough, I'll stay tuned for the conclusion of this one for sure. I'll thank you for your service on both counts... I was seriously considering one of these, but after a talk with Paul things just seemed a bit off, like they didn't know what they were doing. I saw exposed 48V battery terminals, a big no-no ever for 12V, nevermind a voltage that could kill you. The lack of electric bilge pumps is insane though, that I did NOT know about. The last thing you need on a boat with a crew of 4 is someone stuck on pumping duty for two hulls.
@ZeroFun
@ZeroFun 16 күн бұрын
YES! The battery is a mess. I'll give some stuff away - they have it held in place with ratchet straps. Exposed 48v was a finding on the survey also - there was no backing on the battery switch for the high voltage selection box. Like, something metal falls in there, and it's welding things and starting a fire. The lack of 12v battery for accessories is an insane cost cutting measure I didn't know about when I purchased also. DC-DC converter to charge a small 12v lithium battery would have been the way to go. But no, DC-DC powers everything 12v, I think there's a dedicated battery for the windless? Maybe the toilet. Things the DC-DC converter doesn't have enough juice for. But at that point...just have that 12v battery power everything?!? People losing their 48v source are SCREWED. Everything does out, but hey, at least they can take a shit? What boat did you see the exposed 48v on? Did you tour one of the HopYachts in FL? And your description is what I've come to also, they don't know what they're doing and are just trying to figure it out with a plucky attitude.
@MYNautiGirl
@MYNautiGirl 16 күн бұрын
@@ZeroFun Yeah I saw the batteries in an even worse state, it was completely loose. I use a ratchet strap to secure my 30 pound lead acid starter battery for my genset, but for a battery weighing hundreds of pounds, that's wild. It was still in production, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt on that. Agree on the 12V battery to power the whole low voltage system. I would argue it almost is required. The one I saw had NO WINDLASS. Sure it's a 30' boat, but it was also 2023... Now they have 48V windlasses, so I assume they just use that. Without a battery backup, if you lose a DC/DC converter then you're screwed. As you said, no nav lights, no chartplotter, no radar, and no way to charge your devices you may use as a backup. That's terrifying in the wrong conditions and a downright pain in the ass in good ones. I think it was hull 3 or 4, it was in their factory in SA, via a WhatsApp call, even over the low res video I saw things that made me cringe. I do admire the plucky entrepreneur spirit, but not as much the providing inaccurate information that could easily get someone in deep financial trouble, or even killed. That seems more like "managing the truth".

There's a video of someone changing their bearings on an FX motor from a long time ago, and it should be the same process. Someone would have to make a rig to hold the motor in and long bolts for the side of the cash to align to. Zero could fly someone over to do this for way less than a new motor costs. Also a new motor would require syncing with his controller, which could only be done at a service center.. which are all slowly not supporting Zeros anymore. It's a rough time out there!

@@NewZeroland Sam, the way I see it Zero isn't the issue here, they just want to make money selling parts, when I worked for Honda it was no different. I find it hard to believe, with all the ex Zero employees, engineers & brainiacs who own Zeros, no one has figured this out yet. If anything maybe the problem doesn't ever happen (then good on Zero) or nobody is putting any miles on their bikes (which I find hard to believe). I imagine there's a ton of Zeros out in this world racking up a tons of miles/km, we're not talking Lightnings or Verge TS's here. I would think there's a shop or two out there whose figured this stuff out. After taking a break and searching the web quite a bit harder, I found RobG on the AEVA forum and Travis Kimbrell on Zeromanual web site, who have both actually accomplished bearing replacements successfully. It just AMAZES me that there's no shops that have stepped there game up to this challenge.

US insurance is so weird. In Australia an uninsured person hits you, your insurance pays for your repairs, then they sue the other driver to recover their money.

As a lawyer once told me, “you can’t get blood from a stone”: She’s 16, her parents likely get paid under the table and they dropped all insurance because, “it was too expensive after all the accidents”. I love the system you have, but some people, you’d never recover your costs from. :(

@@ZeroFun I believe that Zero finally understand that it can't run an electric motorcycle company by having only large, heavy and expensive motorcycles for experience riders. Different parts of the world have different needs. Us of A riders see motorcycling as a hobby for the weekend but Europeans are everyday commuters when the weather is good. North Europeans like Italy Spain Greece etc have a good weather all year so they are using electric scooters. What i would like to know is if the minibike is good for new riders to learn, if its good for commuting and maybe for joyrides or small excursions outside the city.

I find the Damon news interesting ONLY in a gossip sort of way. I've finally learned talk is cheap, specially in the world of EV's. Honestly I think I'd be MORE interested in what Richard got going on than Damon news. What I am GRATEFUL for is ... hearing that Energica MAY rise again. What is EMF? Is it an EV news source I'm not aware of? I've no interest in following social media, and only travel on KZbin, so I echo Magic Toaster, that you are a GREAT source of EV bike news. Also you've confirmed what I've heard about "the two happiest days of a boat owners life" to be TRUE. I saw you're boo boo earlier, look forward to when you release the whole series.

I need to find out what's the latest Richard. He was selling shares, trying to get enough money to pay the rent. Rumor was he could be getting kicked out of the attic he currently rents? But I'm way behind on rumors. Obviously :D EMF Is the Electric Motorcycle Forum, where all the niche EV Bike news drops first. I need to remember to check it. Bro. I've owned boats, they've been a bit expensive. But commissioning a new boat has been horrible. It was already at the extent of my budget...then it was delivered months late to where I can sail it up before hurricane season. Plus, delivery costs were ~5x higher than quoted, nearly 30K. It's sitting at an expensive slip in a hurricane prone area that requires expensive insurance, while it slowly falls apart. I've started the ball rolling to come out of early retirement. Won't get the opportunity to retire again for 10-15 years. :( Looking at an 80K loss on it, and it may not even sell. Haven't even set foot on it. So stressed.

Remember this company has fully developed a legitimate motorcycle product but has not produced them for sale. The thing that makes it a scam is that they absolutely have the resources to build a few bikes a day to start making good on their preorders. Instead of an IPO they should have tried to get bought out.
@ZeroFun
@ZeroFun Ай бұрын
I don’t believe they’ve developed a product. Have you seen a bike that can shape shift, tell you when someone is about to hit you, and has all the battery capacity and power they promised nearly a decade ago? I think we’ve seen a mule shape shift, while parked. Now do it at 80 while telling me I’m about to get side swiped and to flick the bike onto the shoulder quickly to avoid a crash. That’s what’s promised. While getting 200 miles of range, capable of 200MPH and 200HP. IPO was a clear money grab. Jay leaving before the massive bonus means he was forced out for some reason…

Hey where's my news credit? LOL Dom does seem like a good guy but maybe too little too late. The Cali spot you went to was only suppose to be a research facility while Canada was in Covid lock down. I think Jay expected, lets say, very big financial support from the BC government for making an EV factory in Canada. That didn't happen. I don't know if there was ever any mention of that support or it was wishful thinking. That's when they started letting people go and stoped the Damon Lab forum for order holders. I feel like if the tax credit doesn't come back they all might die off. Zero is losing dealers left and right. Their new Surron clones may be their only hope as that market is doing pretty good.

Best reason to exchange information and take pictures, etc. is because if you do NOT, then who knows what they will tell their insurance company about how you 'drifted into their lane' or such - 2 months later when you can't remember everything, your vehicle has no damage ("See, they got it fixed without telling their insurance company about it even." ) and maybe you don't even have the video anymore. ALWAYS stop, exchange information, NEVER admit fault (even if it is your fault - but don't try and blame them either if it is your fault), and don't tell them about the video!! Keep it safe somewhere and only give it to YOUR insurance company and/or police to prove it was not YOUR fault.

This is a real thing. People either think you'll just give way (when that's not even a possibility) because you're in a Tesla and afraid of repair costs or they actually deliberately target you because they just hate Teslas. But drivers in general are just getting worse and worse. The general state of society (anti-social trends), combined with all the tech "safety" features and vehicles that are MUCH more protective of occupants than even 20 years ago and make people both lazy and much less fearful of injury in a fender-bender. By the way, nobody becomes someone else when they get behind the wheel (or use alcohol or drugs). What comes out in those situations is the real person. Drugs and alcohol remove inhibitions. They can't put anything in your head that wasn't already there in some form. Being enclosed in a vehicle where other people can't get a good look at you gives a degree of anonymity that has the same effect of lowering inhibitions. Again, modern cars insulate people from their immediate environment much more than old cars that didn't even have air conditioning and were much noisier even with the windows up.
@ZeroFun
@ZeroFun Ай бұрын
Yup! Model 3 I was blindly, and slowly lane changed into slowly at the front of many long traffic lines. Like you said, they knew I'd move so my insurance didn't go up, and they felt anonymous because they were so insulated from the world around them. So what if we all waited for minutes to get to the front, they are in more of a hurry, or we were all idiots for waiting. Zoom to that front and get in there, you deserve it! I told myself I'd string a bunch of old tires around my Cybertruck when I got it, and act like a tug boat pushing people back into their lanes when they tried to cut lines. Turns out, I didn't need the tires. hah This kid, if I had to bet a dollar, she was on her phone and thought she saw an opening in her peripheral, so she went for it. Her mom came over, she's pissed, daughter lied and said she thought I was letter her over, video shows...I have no idea what the video shows, she went ahead, then drifted back and into me with her blinker on, no way I was letting her merge, behind me I guess?
