In 1976 when I was 18 years old, my friend Tony Shanahan (long-term bass player for Patti Smith) turned us (the 2 sisters we were dating and myself) on to an evening at the 82 Club in Gotham to see Cherry Vanilla and her Staten Island band. We were totally blown away, that was one truly amazing show indeed! The best songs going and her vocals and stage presence were stunning! By the time I was 20 years old, I had founded a punk band named "THE THE" (not Matt Johnson's band of the same name that succeeded us) that got signed to a 5-year management contract with Jane Friedman's company, THE WARTOKE CONCERN. In 1978/79 we experienced major touring with JOHN CALE/NICO, and THE POLICE as the opening act in America and Canada plus played in all of Gotham's hottest venues opening for all the stars of that era. It was a wild ride with many crazy stories! It all began with seeing Cherry and being influenced by the awesome show I mentioned above. We included her name in the thank-you credits of this Hub City Classic music video that celebrates the remastered, reissued version of my 1982 purple vinyl single as a solo artist: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mp3Hf6OLl9hrsNEsi=LB-EwOMCbnmEzfr1

@ I remember going to the shop in Harvard Square. SBC was, by far, the best Boston band of that era. I always wondered how they didn’t become a worldwide phenomenon. I read something about a legal battle or something.

Damn! That legal garbage about not being able to play records at a record shop is infuriating. Bonkers!

Great in depth interview! Loved all the details and history. Flowed well. Steev, I remember you from WDJM and Enigma with Mary Ann Earl. I was highly active in the Boston music scene and believe you will enjoy this spectacular footage of Moving Targets from a show I produced circa 1985-86. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5zQonqml655eacsi=jtsB9pL_Rg8c5Uq9

When I was first getting into Punk and Hardcore in 1985 a dude from D.C. named Greg made me a mix tape with a bunch of D.C. stuff and also Big Boys. He played me their horn driven stuff as a way of telling me to be open minded. A really nice memory. Big hails to Tim Kerr, his music and art are so impeccable.

I saw Belly in Portland, a great show with Velocity Girl, many moons ago. Got to be right at the stage and I was caught off guard by just how tiny she is. Was the only time I got to see Tanya live, I've seen Kristen several times both solo and as the Muses; first Muses show I saw was Red Heaven tour, so it was after Tanya and Leslie left unfortunately. Kristen is worth seeing anytime it's possible, maybe I'll be able to get to see Tanya again someday.

Rich, I'm very pleased that you name-checked Randy Roos and Steven Paul Perry - two amazing, world-class guitarists that are virtually unknown. I have two recordings that I've been listening to since the '80s that I will always treasure. One is Randy's first solo record, "Mistral", a great fusion album that features him playing the Guitorgan and his fretless guitar. Never released on CD. The other is a Berlin Airlift live in the WERS student studio. I recorded it off the radio that day, listened to the tape for decades, then finally transferred it to digital just before the cassette disintegrated. Perry is flying high, loud and proud. Beautiful melodic rock lines and tone.

Great podcast Rico. Thank you for bringing on Rich. I lived in the small town in Illinois and hung out with Rich back when we were in High School. We were so lucky to have grown up with such great music of the late 60's and early 70's. Great to see you are loving life in Italy.

There's an album by Daniel Romano's Outfit where they recreate the entire Infidels album as if the Plugz were the backing band. Highly, highly recommended. And as much as I love the punk stuff from Repo Man, my favorite track from the album and film is "Reel 10" by the Plugz.

Oh, thank you both so much for this. I have to say when I had my first brush with the Muses (Fat Skier) it changed everything for me. And then this just seemed to blossom into so many bands and projects that it was almost too much to take in. Superb. And, Tanya, my god, what an astonishing musician (particular props for the guitar: nobody else seemed to be doing what you were) and singer/songwriter. Suddenly in the mid/late 80s music got very real for me. Thank you so much.
