First contestant made a massive mistake by not just guessing on the $32,000 question.

@@spacecadet2172 That is true, but guessing is still the more profitable option. You have a 50% chance to gain $16000 vs a 50% chance to lose $15000, that is essentially a wash, but by reaching $32,000 you get a free chance to guess the $64,000 question, which is worth at least $8,000 (assuming you didn't have any idea what the answer is). On average you make a minimum of $8500 more by guessing. You also skip the chance to get a lucky run of questions where you make hundreds of thousands more.

It sure is, Mom. It's one of my favorite and most iconic scene in that film. I always love watching that movie E.T. on VHS (along with the first Toy Story movie, and Fly Away Home with Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin for instance) when I was a kid. Miss those good old days.

This was early enough on that Bob wasn't thinking about how 250k was often exactly when the question writers used "Ripley's Believe it or Not" style trivia with shocking answers. Syria and Egypt don't border each other and are fairly distant from each other, so you'd think Iraq and Saudi Arabia, but no. Shame, if he'd been later on he'd have probably seen enough of the show to sniff that out (I refrain from calling it a capital-T Trick, as I think overall the show was far fairer and nicer than many shows that came after it, even with the trick questions) and it's a shame Regis nudged him to ATA (I don't call shenanigans, I think Regis thought it must be C like everyone else because of borders)
@occono3543
@occono3543 6 ай бұрын
I mean, yeah it's brutal he says the extra 93k would have gone a long way and loses it after the ATA temptation, but look at shows like Million Dollar Money Drop or Weakest Link or Winning Lines or Golden Balls or The Chamber or whatever other cruel BS game shows enticed audiences with, and I still think this is "nice".

Ouch! Rough going for the first guy, getting disqualified after the first question. I was secretly thinking "meter" myself, and who knows whether I'd have opted to consume a lifeline on the first question! *** I definitely flunked the books in order of release year. "The taste of seawater" as the second question?! Ridiculous. I can't imagine a person alive getting that wrong, but why wasn't that the first question? I know Drew was 18 years old, but using a lifeline to guess "inches" as the unit of measurement on a 2x4... I was disappointed. I know he was young and nervous... While I can't fault him for either of those qualities, the fact he immediately knew "Cartography" on the next question but couldn't instinctively guess inches on a two-by-four...? That puzzles me all the more, since he seems intellectual. Not knowing much about politics & government, it was hard for me to guess the governor of TX, especially because, in the moment, I couldn't remember the year of the recording. The answer "George W" almost seemed like a false positive until I exited full-screen to read your title. 2000 just barely predated GWB's presidency. Without a lifeline I definitely couldn't have guessed "Flutie Flakes." I know less about sports than I do about cereal. I'd imagine that cereal is no longer in existence! I definitely wouldn't have guessed that Spain was on the Iberian peninsula, so good on him there. I'm terrible at geography. And WOW... it was a toughie between MASH, Seinfeld, and Cheers... Truth be told, I wouldn't have guessed MASH. I was torn between Seinfeld and Cheers, and I probably would've said Seinfeld without a lifeline! Amazing that this kid (18 in 2000... he's 3 years younger than me) guessed MASH straight away before even consuming the two lifelines. I couldn't have told you off-the-cuff how many members were in the House of Representatives, but among those choices I would have guessed right! I felt very good about that. He was smart to walk away from the "Death of Marat" painting question. I certainly didn't know it, and in his shoes I like to think I'd have done the same thing. He did well. Not only did he win $64,000, but it's great that he also set a new WWTBAM record for most money won by someone his age! Great! *** I would have gotten the state capitals qualifying question right! Hooray! I agree with Jeff (although he didn't say it aloud): I was expecting an adult male deer to be a "buck," but that was not one of the choices. I would have then selected Stag however, just as he did.

11:22 This is really tricky for a $8000 question, since Top Gun was also iconic for sunglasses, and you had to know the model of one of the pairs to rule out the other. I feel bad for the guy. Charming that Regis signed his cast, though.

The fast-forwarding took me by surprise! What made you do that? And I was VERY proud of myself to have guessed correctly on the order of the old TV shows' depicted eras! I didn't use a stopwatch, but chances are good I still wouldn't have placed first in that race. The question with "Uncle Tom's Cabin": Having not read any of the books, on that one I would probably have declined to use a lifeline, thinking I could just guess my way through (which is what I did at home just now)... And I would have been wrong. So that's where my game would have ended! I'm excited for him. It's a bit nerve-wracking that he's already used two lifelines and still has so far to go (I think about halfway more), but he did talk a good game at the outset... I have faith he can pull it off in the second half. No spoilers! ;)

I think Tim's $4K question was slightly too much money; I would have had that question value at $2000 maximum upon seeing his first five questions which were all relatively easy. His state geography question should have been worth $4k in my opinion.
