To explain how out of touch Vance is about the purpose of Coalition Forces in Afghanistan, feeds his rhetoric regarding conflict in the Middle-East. What has to be understood about the ANA is that those soldiers came from settlements, towns and villages where they lived/once lived amongst the Taliban; for them to join the ANA was to face the greatest fear of fighting those trained Taliban insurgents, knowing what would happen to them if ever they were taken prisoner. The problem with the ANA was the leadership - weak and inexperienced without the crutch of CF guidance (irrespective of what you may think about the West installing a 'puppet' government). Having served there, the main effort in the latter stages was to train the Afghan conventional and special forces to a level where they could fend off and defeat Taliban forces. When the CF exfill'd, it was the fault of the Afghan Government and Military leadership that caused the downfall. The soldiers themselves saw this as a signal that they had no backing from their own leadership and duly fled their posts. Of course they weren't as professional as CF troops, but they can't be blamed for that. The history of the country and the rise of the Taliban created an environment of fear, given the Taliban's authoritarian way of running the country under Islamic (Sharia) law. Let's not forget that Donald Trump caused the timeline of events which caused a most ridiculous extraction from Afghanistan. There are videos in existence where the Taliban have filmed ANA and old US Forces bases, where it appears that US Forces appeared to have dumped all their equipment and run. This is quite false, with exceptions. Over the course of the training, partnering and mentorship of the ANA, many former US Forces fighting assets were donated to Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - indeed, they also funded the purchase of much of their own kit and equipment from the US and Private Security Companies. Those videos may depict what seemingly appear to be US vehicles etc, but very, very few were deliberately left behind. Private Security Companies, in the main, left just about all their vehicles and other items of kit. Trump touted that US Generals approached him to explain that the date to extract US Forces was far too soon, given the amount of kit and equipment (including all manner of vehicles and air assets) and troops that would be needed to be recovered to the USA (or returned/redistributed to US Forces in Germany via Ramstein AFB) - whilst also maintaining Force Protection in doing so. Trump's account is wildly different to what ACTUALLY happened, but he uses his fairytale version to belittle the US Forces executive branches in command of Afghan-related operations. And to hear what he continues to LIE ABOUT, parroted by JD 'eyeliner' Vance, does nothing for the morale of troops, whether or not they served on overseas operations. Disheartening is an understatement, coming from a man who wants again to be Commander-in-Chief.
