When Tivoli opened in 1843, the amusement park was located just outside the fortified medieval part of Copenhagen that was the entire city back then. The fortification around Copenhagen with all its bastions and the surrounding moat were dismantled from the mid 1850s and up to the mid 1880s. The lakes in Tivoli, H.C. Ørsted Park, Botanic Garden and Østre Anlæg (just next to the National Gallery, are remnants of the moat that once surrounded Copenhagen. Carlsberg was founded in 1847. The brewery actually started in the medieval part of Copenhagen but moved outside the city walls to Valby Hill to get access to cleaner water for the brewing process. In the same area the son of the Carlsberg founder opened what was known as Ny Carlsberg later due to disagreements with his father. Both Carlsberg and Ny (New) Carlsberg merged later and this is the brewery Carlsberg today. The swastika was used by Carlsberg on all their bottles and other places due to its original significance of divinity and spirituality. After the rise of Hitler and the Nazis, this symbol disappeared from all Carlsberg products in April 1940 after the Nazis invaded and occupied Denmark. The Carlsberg use of the Swastika shall be seen in a historical context of the time when the use started which was about 75 years before the rise of the Nazis and their adoption of its use. Today, the Swastika is therefore associated mostly for hatred, genocide and human suffering instead of the original context of peace, luck and tranquility.

Sadly you didn't notice or mentioned the fine mounted statue in front of Arken! And because of he strange shaped rooms it originally was a horrible Museum, but now they have added more ordinary exhibition rooms also. And the chairs in one of the first restaurants were designed by famous Arne Jacobsen.

The tallest building in Copenhagen is the Pasteur Tower in Carlsberg Byen. This building is 120 meters tall and was completed in 2022.

You may have notised the "Swasticas" inside the Elephant Gate and Carlsberg used them on the bottles also. They - instantly became removed when Germany occupied Denmark and became replaced with an Ornament. And "the river" was part of the old Fortress round the Town, for defence and they are artifial lakes. And you are able to climb the outside Spiral on the Tover.

Lovely! Thank you for sharing your trip. Would you mind sharing the link to the airbnb?
@AbsolutelyOrdinary19 күн бұрын
Hello, thanks for your comment, and sorry for this delayed response! I just tried the link to the Airbnb but it doesn't look like it is active for now... Try searching for Pasteur's Tower on Airbnb and it should show similar listings. It's a lovely apartment building in a great neighbourhood.

Thank you and sorry for this late reply! I don't remember the name of the cafe, but it's easy to find - it's directly opposite the Ba Mu Temple gate!
