This looks promising. The half width reminds me of Cyrus. At this price level, it should offer I2S, though. Is the drive user replaceable? Good luck with your channel.

There's a lot to learn from the past when they still used their ears to create ........
@frankgeeraerts6243Ай бұрын
The grill is not original ............the original was in one piece . I found a mint pair for a very fair price and enjoy these speakers a lot .......like Maria Callas singing in my room and wanting to give her kiss after she stopped singing ... This speaker was engineered to have a big sound in a typical small British living room .....and it works out well this way.........the model one is my preference compared to so called later upgrades..............;it plays music coherent and without any hugh end listening fatigue ...........the bass rolls off earlier than a bass reflex but being a sealed bass load it continues to go deepr than a BR........... The better the amp and source the more joy it rings to the soul of music. Do a good job restoring it ........beware of very expensive foil capacitors , they tend to break the musical balance of the speaker because they have different electric parameters , ESR and inductive as well as favouring too much detail out of balance with the music ..... This speaker was still build when engineers measured but also LISTENED to their baby... They are able to transfer you to a concert hall.........;in your own home.......not many actual ( even high definition ) speakers can do that .
@HiFi-DIYАй бұрын
Agreed the grill is not original, some previous owner have cut it down! What foil capacitors (brand/type/serie) did you use? The sound I amazing, however I will still remove some stuff....like the fuses and the protection circuit.
@frankgeeraerts6243Ай бұрын
@@HiFi-DIY I leave the fuses with direct coupled amplifiers , unless they use OPT and or capacitive loading.........it's not worth the risk ! .one can use better fuses at the expense of byuing those The circuit /level/protecting ......;;;can be turned of with a switch....on/off . With film capacitors one will gain detail etc ...........BUT this speaker was VOICED with the original capacitors ........you will loose the voicing and the musical coherence of the speaker.........original components/capacitors /sets are available in the UK at Falcon Acoustics who still build the best version of the LS 3/5............they claim the same as I do . BUIT you can easily upgrade the wiring and the speaker post as well as resolder all solderpoints with good solder like AN or WBT silver ...NO ROHS SHJIT !!!! Curious about the follow up of your restoration .........beware of tutning this beautiful sounding speaker into an audiophile high end headache with listening fatigue instead of joy listening to music.. Have a nice day.

R241 is parallel with R242, I replaced R241 with two 15K resistors and 20K linear pot so now R241 can go from 30K to 50K. + I added a 10ohm resister in all the cathode to messuage the current.

Do you think I can use this amp without the fan on the back when I leave it open? Will it overheat?

If you leave the top open I believe that it will have sufficient cooling if it is free standing (not on a rack), however I would have it under close observation to make sure it is OK!

Great job! Thank you very much for the great explanation. I would ask a suggestion regarding power amps. I'm thinking about an acquisition and I don't know what could be better between a Marshall 9100 and a Mesa fifty fifty. You have tried both of them. What would you suggest? I search something to pair with a tube preamp that can play good also at low volume. Thank you in advance and go on with these very nice videos ;-l
@HiFi-DIY2 ай бұрын
Well I would go for the Fifty/Fifty it is easier to service and if you make a variable negative it is perfect. The Marshall is more "hard" If you want to go with low volumes I highly recumbent a loadbox, the sweetest drive sound comes from the output tubes driven into clipping.

Who's buying the players like this CYRUS?!? - Ugly design, the remote control looks very cheap, CD-loader as in the car's CD-player, display looks like the same one in a children's TOYS and, finally, after pressing the push-button you hear a disgusting sound of "click" - as if a fat flea was cruched.

Well, there is one thing this do, that many good-looking CD do not do. And you must hear it to believe it, I used the digital output and compared it to AudioLab 8300CD (using the build in DAC of the 8300CD) and the difference was mind-blowing.

Reviewed it 27/02/24. Very revealing of classical and acoustic material, with great separation and detail on cello, piano and guitar. I played Lutoslawski, Webern and Chinese Classical. When playing hip-hop (Masta Ace), the sampled bass was muddy on 'I Got Ta'..This track loops a James Brown original, on what can't have been great equipment..the vocals are good with the track illuminated by the insistent looping which the turntable doesn't miss. On such varied material, the turntable did well..a thumbs up!

Hey there My one doesn’t even come to boot screen. Have you managed to find out what was the problem?
@HiFi-DIY5 ай бұрын
Yes, I found the issues. There was two. First I had a look at the ”large” Electrolytic capacitors where one looked bad. However I found that two of them had cold solder joints, but replaced them anyway as they were OLD. Then the lithium battery was faulty, and the battery holder needed some cleaning before inserting a new battery. Final point was a master reset and then all was fine!
@efertheredfish25 ай бұрын
Yeah, heat damage. That is always an issue. Another reason I am careful with tubes. Ceramic sockets slightly taken off the PCB board would have solved that issue.

Put it on a variable output isolation transformer and bring it up slowly while monitoring the plate voltage of the output tubes. Start with that. Check for excessive ripple on B+ lines.

I had one of these back in the late 90's that I paired with a Mesa Quad Preamp through a BBE 462 Sonic Maximizer. It to this day was the best sounding rig I've ever owned. I ended up letting go of it due to a ground loop problem I couldn't solve and traded them to a guy for 2 Marshall heads. One being a JCM800/2210 that I still own and love to this day. I do wish I had that rack unit back though. I keep toying with the idea of requiring both items but they have gotten astronomical in price. You never know though.

Excellent content. Looking forward to more clips on that project. I've just got my hands on the model, also from 1990, and the power pesistor you are pointing at in the video shows some damage (white powder coming out). If you were to replace it, what exactly would you choose?

Did you have to use new plastic plugs to reattach the circuit board? Mine seems to be for one time use only. How did you remove the ribbon cable? In my cd8x, which is slightly different, I could not get that cable off without fearing to break it.
@HiFi-DIY7 ай бұрын
No I was able to reatached/reuse the plastic plugs for the board, however you have to be careful. There are two ribbon cables in mine, and they have to be disconnected both. I guess you also can remove the ribbon cables without soldering Mine I had to pull it out in a straight line away from the drive

Have a set of 35.2’s. Completely rebuilt crossovers. Using air core inductors and Jantzen supreme caps. Ditched all magnetic stuff in signal path. Including magnetic bi wire links. Has made a huge difference. As there’s some good technology here, minus cross over build quality.
