Had an 85er, 300-6, single barrel electric throttle body, 5 speed. If I kept it under 60, empty bed, I could see 30mpg most times. Loaded, would get down in the 10 -12 range. Bullet proof though. A guy I knew took it off my hands, he ran it until the frame snapped, around 750,000 miles.

If the exhaust valve is sticking open it might be a camshaft lobe that is worn down or the motor is slightly out of time... good video

I don't know what you use the truck for so I was wondering what it's like if you come to a really steep hill either pulling a trailer or with a heavy load. Also wondered what the engine's like when it's really cold? Would it struggle if you had to pull away up a really steep hill?

@@robinprice4877 the I6 is a fairly capable engine but definitely has its limits. Mine has 2:75 gears and it’s a short box so it’s not much of a towing rig. I towed about 2800 pounds with it about a month ago and it did ok but not great. Didn’t like the hills much. A set of 4:10 gears would help it out but then I’d have a hard time just cruising at 65 and it’d completely kill the gas mileage.

@@claylyons6447 I agree. I’d argue the IDI diesels were better but technically those where built by IH and installed into the Ford trucks. So if we’re talking engines actually built by Ford the 300s gotta be the best. Close 2nd would be the old 6.6L 400 V8s

Make sure when you install the new one, to pump the brakes 4 times, honk the horn 2X short and one long honk, then pump the gas 5x followed by turning the headlights on and off 2X in THAT order to initialize the new switch🤣🤣🤣🤣
