I witnessed a massive positive polarity bolt immediately to the right on the side of the road. It was so insanely loud even inside the car. I thought for sure it hit the car as it was as if the sound was inside the car with me. It sounded like an enormous engine backfire. I honestly think it was close enough to hurt or kill me if I had been standing outside rather than in the car. I remember an extremely bright white flash off to my right followed by an orange glow reflecting in the rear view mirror. The sound was with the white flash. It burned into my retina so bad I could hardly see the road and had to pull over to wait for my vision to recover. I was also worried about the car but everything was fine. This was july 15 in on northbound I-96 just past Benton harbor. After midnight. Maybe close to 1am. I was driving back home after a lackluster chase attempt. I never reached the tornadoes and severe straight line winds in Illinois as the line kind of veered right and weakened. There were occasional bright anvil crawlers in the general light rain behind the storms. It was an anvil crawler that ended in a positive CG that hit right next to me on the side of the road.
