Does anyone remember "Galloping Ghost"? It was a very early attempt to make single channel (Bang - bang) RC work as proportional control of both rudder and elevator. I had a "Matador" that I attempted to convert to this, it was comical becase basically both the rudder and elevtor "wobbled" either side of neutral causing the model to wobbly around. The wings of my Matador finally gave up and broke in two...

Look on the channel for PHILG2864. Phil is interested in ancient radio control. Some guys still fly old RC at the annual Pontefract event.

@TheKodakman Жыл бұрын
The small diesel engine is for the modern brakes which have been fitted for safety reasons. The original loco did not have brakes but because it ran at only 5mph that did not matter too much.

Billy is totally un-sprung, neither are the wagons & their couplings. The experience would be pretty violent for those used to taking a ride somewhere on the back of a cart drawn by a horse. Where Billy & the later Wylam Dilly beat a horse is that the iron-horse does not need to draw breath so often and it will not collapse exhausted on a scorching hot day. Thus you would need to change horses Mind-you the crew would probably relish the chance to cool off in a nearby pond. It all depends on how cheap it is to feed the iron horse vs the four-legged beast. These replicas do cheat in one fundamental respect in that they are constructed to run on standard gauge track and can be taken anywhere. It would be interesting to see how much of a load Billy and Elephant could pull from a standing start.
@TheKodakman3 жыл бұрын
I found that the ride was quite smooth. You don't need springs when doing only 5mph.

Puffing Billy was an iron cart-horse. No faster than shown here but it was a roaring success. It & Wylam Dilly both lasted around fifty years at work. Billy was made 18134. Wylam Dilly came later in 1815 and has improvements Billy does not. This locomotive does take a minor liberty with historical authenticity as Wylam was 5ft gauge and the replica is clearly standard gauge as it has been to other railways.
