Driving there !!! Beware foreign visitors of various serious hazards you will encounter. I will provide a few examples to consider. Check the validity of your car insurance and coverage including excess for accidents (many are excessive & punitive). Inspect the car , tyres, interior carefully and take images prior to signing contract. Get good map and understand the majority of roads are rural roads or tracks with loads of deep pot holes, uneven surfaces and many speed humps which serve no real purpose I find. Road signs are few and often small even on the so called motorway (actually a dual carriagway with loads of roundabouts) DO NOT expect european driving habits or rules of the road. Drivers will sometimes overtake you on either side at some speed which can be a shock to the beginner. You will see some strange driving from the locals. Speed limits change frequently and there are speed cameras and police radar traps. Invariably a bribe can sort out the little "difficulty" if you are polite . Drive on the LEFT as in UK ! Beware there are few pavements or paths for the poor pedestrians to walk along. So pay great attention to people walking along roads even in towns and the particularly dangerous capital Port Louis ! Expect vehicles in front of you (including taxis) to stop in front of you without warning ! Drive defensively and slower than you normally do. Carry a camera or mobile phone to record any unforseen incidents. Driving at NIGHT is especially dangerous ! There are few lighted streets and everything appears very dark and bleak. Expect to meet unlit cyclists, stray dogs, unlit cars, wondering people & children. Better NOT drive at night in my opinion and unless you have experience in driving abroad and particularly in 3rd world countries consider using taxis (but check the fare carefully as there are two - one for foreign visitors which aqre high and another for locals which are pretty low) Finally if you want a treat and a test of your driving skills visit GOODLANDS shopping street! Drive carefully and dont drink & drive.
