Things I learned so far watching this: The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition: 0: Using keyboard arrow keys and numbers may be faster for text selections 1: Saving time by saving during sword fighting to tailor responses given. 2: Using the Prize in the Cabinet 3: Using the telescope lens may be better than the cannon ball 4: That you can move while igniting the gun powder - somehow 5: Using the Navigator head behind the pillar reduced animation time??? 6: 6 correct rooms to get to the ghost ship 7: Asking nicely works rather than drop kicking into lava 8: Skipping the 2nd ghost 'through the door' - Congrats on your new record time. LeChuck's Revenge Special Edition: 0: Map Glitch 1: Stop manip 2: Picking up the knife through the table 3: Horn Strat Sliding ????? !!!!! ????? - What?! 4: you don't need to release Kate 5: You can get the map piece in the drinking contest without the mirror and spyglass - - somehow 6: "Speed Running" using the book 7: Just needing the first limb for the doors

If memory serves, it started around the time we had discovered the ability to slide in Monkey Island 1 and 2. Previously we could slide in Monkey Island 3, 4 and 5, so the last piece of the puzzle was when a slide happened in Monkey Island 6. It was then still a while before anyone actually put this together into a speedrun. Or something like that...

New to this, but why is turning off music in Monkey 2 faster?

There are a handful of spots where the game will wait for a music cue to finish playing before proceeding, so by turn off the music the wait time is skipped. This is possible within ScummVM

Hey man. Can I ask, on the Amiga version, how are the disk-swops handled? I remember this game came on a bunch of stiffys, and disk swopping on amiga is a major pain. Yet, you guys fly through the runs with no disk swops?

Good question! I'll answer in 2 parts, first it was possible on an Amiga to "install" the whole game to a hard drive bypassing the need to constantly swap disks. Secondly to play these old games on modern hardware most people use ScummVM which does the same thing more or less.

This is the Waterworld - Map track. A BAD game with a good soundtrack that isn't super well known.

I only completed 1 4JF, it had 2 chemists 1 dancer and 1 time mage. As someone who never uses chemist it was interesting. My favourite job is Dragoon, i don't think it's super good in the game i just like it. Samurai is OP if you don't mind wasting money :D

Chemist is an interesting class for sure. It is a big learning curve, but is arguably the best support class in the game. Also I respect Dragoon being a favorite. Despite not being as strong as other physical damage dealers it certainly looks cool.

While it is an unfortunate side effect of going fast, long story short we skip the song by tricking the game to thinking we are playing in a foreign language. Since the song was never translated into other languages.

Yes it is! FUN FACT: at first we thought this strat was useless for speedruns, because while you could get to Blood Island early, you wouldn't have the items needed to complete the game. BUT as it turns out, you can talk to Stan to "give" him the gold tooth even though you don't have it.

I was really proud when I was a kid that I could beat both Monkey Island games without really having to think about solutions to any of these puzzles... I never timed it, but I assume it took at the very least 10 times as long. Since I neither was a speedrunner nor knew what that even was, I never skipped dialogue... If I had seen something like this 20 years earlier, it would've seriously tempted me to try this out. Nice run, even though I already knew it would be a record my heart beat got faster towards the end. Congratulations!

As it turns out, when retiming the run it was faster than WR by the tiniest of margins. Less than a tenth of a second, but for all intents and purposes I will call this tied with WR.

hi, I love watching monkey island speedruns I was wondering is a sub 30 minute run currently possible? and do you have any tips for getting into MI speed running?

Sub 30 IS possible, if just barely. 29:5X is the goal but there isn't much wiggle room. iirc there are guides out for most games in the series to get you started. Otherwise the Speedy Adventures Discord is the main hub for discussion of Monkey Island speedrunning. Which should be linked on any of the Monkey Island pages on SRC

Wow! This looks like magic! Did you use special tools to skip animations and make everything go so quickly? Is it possible to achieve this result without any tools? I'm bewildered!

As it turns out, pressing ESC will skip almost every animation and much of the dialogue.
