I showed this song to my therapist. She loved it. Elliott Smith had a power of putting feelings that I can't quite describe into words

We lose great artists all the time, but rare is the one you lose that makes sense. I put it to you that the world was not ready for Elliot Smith. I’m serious about this. He didn’t belong here. We got lucky!

The Ramones were great not because of brilliant song writing but because of how well the band performed their songs, this is no great secret or revelation of course, and I only mention it because in many ways Heatmiser were the opposite side of that coin: these songs might be masquerading as jangly mid 90's indie pop but they're excellent and full of interesting choices. Elliot Smith was no joke.

This reminds me of another sissy criminal Ricardo. Ricardo is a serial killer. He also doesn't like plainclothed police officers. They get in the way of his serial killing in hospital hallways. Elliott is tied in with this criminal business and attacks upon plainclothes police officers and medical regulators going back years now, and coming to a recent culmination in the Medford, Oregon, hospital hall-way serial killings. This is what is made possible with this slanderous 'music.'

Interesting to think that if you lived in the PNW in the 90s, you could've seen Elliot Smith, the Melvins, Unwound and Nirvana live.

Elliott Smith mentions Black And White (Thinking and the video game) a few times throughout his body of released work. His songs, I mean. He may have had Borderline Personality Disorder, too. Like me.

"He may have had Borderline Personality Disorder". You just explained something I have never understood! I have been an obsessive Elliott Smith fan since I was a teenager. I met him by waiting outside a hotel. And I have Borderline Personality Disorder, too, which I guess is why I identify with him so strongly :)
@JaneDoe-zc2zn

Black & White is a PC video game about individuals battling to become The God. And Black And White thinking is a feature of Borderline Personality Disorder. A disorder caused by substantial abuse to the "afflicted". The symptoms of borderline all indicate that the person with the PD is being abused.

You're everybody's second home Always trying to get me alone An easy way to lose it all Always there when all else fails Over by the west side rails But I don't really need that now I never really did anyhow I only really needed alcohol Something that'd treat me okay And wouldn't say the things you'd say Please turn out the light I get a sick confusion headache Trying to figure out who's right Dreaming on the silver strand Waking up to plainclothes man You little bastard, little boy in blue Someone's gonna get to you And fuck up everything you do Some european son He's serious with everyone And he thinks he'll win you with his angry kiss Acting like he has no needs Wanting you to watch him bleed Made for each other bet you pay me any mind Just goes to show my continual decline They say that I'll recover my love of her once in a while But I don't know I don't think so There's something that I'll tell you now Now that no one else is around The sort of lesson that I learned from you Not quite the way you planned But I know you'll understand Someone takes a photograph A picture while their sweetheart laughs A perfect moment in a flash of light Counting back from three till one That's exactly what you've done And I'm so Unsurprised I remember, I remember why I dream in black and white Goes to show my continual decline They say that I'll recover My love of her Once in a while But I don't know I don't think so I don't think so

Most talented, well-rounded songwriter. Ever. I'm a massive Lennon fan, and Elliott, in terms of skill, dominates John in every category, except maybe vocals, John had a really incredible voice.

Yep, Elliott had the advantage of being able to learn from The Beatles, Jobim and others so it shouldn’t be a surprise that he was able to take the craft further. I agree on the voice being the one area where Lennon had the edge.

@@flyondonnie9578 Lennon's songwriting musically (independent of the words, which are quite good too) and yes, his voice, was the most interesting thing about the Beatles and he's above everyone in that. Just my take.
