We've been having an unusual amount of positive lightning strikes this year where I live. It's hard to explain why a storm feels or sounds different when you're trying to explain something like this to people who have never actually experienced strong thunderstorms before. Or, never got too close to a strike.

I hv experienced positive strikes in my city about 4-5 times, within a span of just 6 years, starting from 2k17, and each time, it sounded like a Diwali Sutli Atom Bomb being burst on a Microphone, scaring the sh!t out of me, due to my phobia over bomb like explosive sounds! Spitting facts that they suck 🤢🤮

But what part of the lightning bolt actually causes those "bomb-like" pops thoughout the duration of the thunder? Is it the jagged points of the bolts facing the observer? Such a mystery and fascinating!!

No. That's just the thunder breaking the sound barrier since its traveling fast due to the power of the lightning.

@storm12weather
@storm12weather Ай бұрын
@Johnny64ism I used to think that was an emp effect on the powerlines, but now I think it's the emp effect on the phone itself. Positive strikes are significantly higher voltage than normal lightning and can effect electronics miles away. There are other video examples of static in the camera audio during positive strikes. Since it occurs simultaneously with the lightning, it cannot be sound directly from the strike, which takes about 5 seconds to arrive.

@storm12weather Ай бұрын
Technically, since it's the lightning that creates sound, I'd argue you could say a lightning strike is loud. For example, if I say an explosion was loud, I'm of course referring to the sound it created. Semantics, I guess. 😆

Great footage! This is how storm videos should be. No narration to distract from the sounds and visuals of the storm. Also, great camera work;focusing in a specific direction and not panning around all the time which is annoying and makes other videos hard to watch. I have nothing but good things to say about your effort and results.

I really appreciate your compliments! I've tried to hone my videography skills over several years of chasing and filming storms. I try to provide several angles but eliminate panning while filming. When I want a new angle, I usually stop and then start recording again. Or I'll make sure to cut out any footage that is too shaky. The more I've chased, the more I've developed my own personal filming style. My objective is to get the viewer as immersed in the storm as possible without actually being there. 🙂

What town exactly was the hook echo located relative to where you were? You mentioned you were north of it.
@storm12weather
@storm12weather 2 ай бұрын
The hook passed about 5 miles to the southwest, through Berkeley Heights, Westfield, Linden, and then Carteret before moving over southern Staten Island. There was another supercell before this that passed just to the north about an hour earlier as well.
@DynamicDuo795
@DynamicDuo795 2 ай бұрын
@storm12weather , nice. The last supercell that struck our region was back on August 13th of last year. A tornado warning was issued for Somerset, Union, Middlesex, and Hudson counties. I did observe a confirmed hook echo over Roselle Park, NJ, not far from where you filmed this storm, right after it passed over me while I was filming it from home. However, it failed to produce a tornado and continued northeast into Staten Island and Brooklyn. Since 2021, we've definitely experienced very strong thunderstorms, including supercells and tornado activity, which has also greatly increased as well. We've had more twisters pop up than what is considered normal or average for our region. Especially strong tornadoes. The Mullica Hill event in 2021 was one of the strongest tornadoes in New Jersey's history. Confirmed EF3 twister. We shouldn't be getting tornadoes that strong.

Thank you! I use a Nikon D7500 and had a 20 to 80 mm adjustable lens. I use it for photos but it takes great video too. I typically film storm footage at 1080p 60fps instead of 4k 30fps because the higher framerate makes the motion of the rain and wind look much smoother.
@weathermanofthenorth1547

@@storm12weather I use 1080p 60fps too. Lightning is way better too. Handles blurring better too I noticed.

A positive lightning strike like this woke me up from dead sleep when I was a kid. At that age, I was terrified of thunder, so the explosion caused me PTSD. The next night, I suffered a terrible nightmare about it, and I woke up shaking violently. I was simultaneously frozen in place and I couldn’t stop shaking for a few seconds after I woke up. My baby sister was sleeping in my bedroom with me, so I crawled into bed with her, and then I calmed down enough to go back to sleep. Now I’m not as scared of thunder as I used to be, but to this day, I never want to hear a sound like that again.

the bulbs in those parking lot lights ( shoe box luminares ) are probably shot now, the combination of the arc tubes being violently rattled round and constantly cutting and restriking probably has shortened they're life span quite a bit. in any case all those lights will need to be relamped (to have they're bulbs replaced) which will only ad to the cost of the damage.
