My take on the '83 version of the gremlin, and why it gives the finger wag at John Lithgow and flies off at the end after seeing the airport come into view, is that this is all just fun for the gremlin. It destroys planes for its own amusement, and doesn't particularly care if it gets thwarted by some circumstance or another, because it can just go find another plane to rough up if it feels like it. The gremlin is absolutely just doing it for the lulz.

Lithgow just does angst and anxiety so well it adds to the creepiness of the scene. I really appreciate Shatner too and I think he is often slighted for being over-dramatic when he really is capable of very fine acting. For me, the 80’s version is king.

I'm surprised so many in the comments find the 83 version scary at all. Maybe it's because I saw Gremlins first, but I find that creature far more comical than the 63 version. The madcap pacing of Miller's interpretation, as well as the silly supporting characters and some of the effects choices (such as the bulging eyeballs) come off like a Looney Tunes short. The puppet monster is stiff and lifeless, not menacing at all. I think that's why the Simpon's parody pulled almost entirely from that version. The 63 monster costume may look stupid, but the acting of the creature is far more compelling. He doesn't have opaque eyes and a rictus grin. He's somber and curious. His movement isn't, as CJ put it, like a father shuffling around a kitchen making coffee, but like the lumbering of a gorilla. He's an animal that has found something strange and as he monkey's with it, keeps looking back at Shatner and studying his response. It's like he's experimenting on him, deliberately driving him to madness just to see what will happen next. I guess if you were very little the puppet might be scary, but that was never my experience of it. And today, I think it's aged worse than the man in the cookie monster costume, at least in terms of being terrifying.

There was a parody on The Simpsons that outdid all three versions of this episode. On the original, it was left open-ended how Bob Wilson would be treated after everyone else sees the claw marks and damage to the plane. On the John Lithgow version, the mechanics draw attention to the claw marks and wing damage, but it is still left open-ended how that will change the verdict of how John Lithgow's character will be treated. On The Simpsons, Bart was still treated as being insane even after everyone else agreed that there was a monster on the bus. The Simpsons refuted the confidence that Wilson and Valentine had at the end.
