Is the CPU upgradeable? I have a 12 Year old ASUS Laptop that had a 2nd Generation Pentium Dual Core B960, and dropped in an i5-2410M CPU and it worked right out of the box, with a noticeable speed boost. Might be worth looking into for it.

The best use of homebrew on the DS/DSi is backing up GBA saves/roms. There is software out there that allows you to read/write saves, backuo the ROM itself, and even overwrite the whole game if the chip is rewritable (chinese bootleg GBA carts) The 3DS is a better platform for homebrew but the DS/DSi was the last system with GBA cart and it's the only system where you can load homebrew from a flashcart on the DS side and still be able to access the physical GBA slot from that DS cart.

My HP 2570p came out in 2012, I've upgraded it with a SSD and 12 GB RAM. It runs Mint super fast for all I'm using it for, cost me a total of ~70 GBP. I used to have one like this 10 years ago for work, it traveled with me all over the world and survived snow storms, sand storms, monsoon rains and a car crash. The thing is a tank!

Lucky that you got a device with any Vulkan support. A little older and it'd rule out most gaming capabilities. I wonder - were D3D games running over WineD3D or DXVK/D8VK? I've seen WineD3D cause a sizeable performance hit on old hardware. Have you tried Proton Sarek? Sarek is supposed to focus on improving experience on older devices (although I'm not sure if they backported D8VK to it, which would be needed for Vice City). Either way: good video

Dscraft is another good one, it's creative minecraft on the ds which is rather impressive and I've not heard of gba runner, I'll have to look it up.

im using a dell latitude E6540 on windows 10. 320G hard drive (failing may replace) 4g of ram (upgrading to 8g soon) and an i5 4310m. has vga, hdmi, 4 usb 3.0 ports, ethernet, full backlit keyboard, sd card reader, and a dvd drive. sadly i dont have the i7 version with amd grafics and also a screen better than 1366x768p. i think this laptop is 9-10 years old

Ive found on older hardware anything with systemd is a big no no - systemd really chokes older hardware - so something like Devuan or artix work really well.

If you had DSi, you could even play PC point & click games from 1990s and 2000s by using ScummVM emulator. Btw, I am interested how you would prove your claim that DS was somehow less powerful than N64. On N64, extremely detailed open world games such as Fighting Fantasy or Dementium 2 or C.O.R.E or Splinter Cell simply don't exist. I know that you have your heart placed in certain critically acclaimed games such as Zelda on 64, but if you ever play through Eragon on DS (an open world Action RPG game), then you will see that visually there is just no comparison. Eragon looks better than many PS2 games and I say it as a former PS2 owner. Not to mention that DS has its own open world GTA clone called "COP - the recruit". Mario 64 DS models are also more detailed in polygons than their N64 counterparts. We also can see Resident Evil 2 on N64 and Resident Evil 1 (Dead Silence) on DS, and DS version is a clear winner here. I should also add that DS models are surprisingly even more detailed than PS1 ones of RE1. N64 has been a commercial defeat due to games being limited only to 64 mb. DS games can be even up to 512 mb in size. Because of that only few dozens of games were released on N64 but thousands on DS. If I didn't convince you, please take a brief look at my album of my favourite DS & GBC games. Almost all of the screenshots I took myself from my homebrewed DSi. I personally think that, in general, people always under-hestimate the power of Nintendo consoles, it's like the N64, 3DS, Wii, etc... Also, Super Mario Galaxy DS is currently still in developpement, they just haven't given out an updated build yet.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T 10 year laptop with core i7(4 cores 8threads) and 16 GB of RAM works like a charm even with Windows 10 launched in a virtual machine. I believe even a 2004-2007 made laptops are serviceable for many jobs(not Win 11 of course)

OH! wait i wanna point something out, DO NOT use the website software on the R4 cards!! they have timebombs that turn off the flashcard to trick you into buying a new ones (it can be countered by changing the date on your ds to something before it was deactivated) and usually pose a GOOD risk at corrupting your SD card when launching application! and im speaking from experience, my sd card got corrupted from it and i had to do a full format and sector remap to get it working again! be safe ds owners!!! EDIT: btw you can use something like YSMENU or Twilight Menu (make sure to get the one for flashcards) to have a safe experience on the DS!

I use manjaro on a 8-9 year old acer c740 chromebook, Arch on a thinkpad t430 (13 years old) and manjaro on a macbook pro 2012; so, yes, 10 year old laptops are VERY usable with Linux. It's the only way I roll, my desktop is even an old server from 2014 or so, it's an X99 with a 14 core xeon, I'm in the process of building a dual CPU model too, it's probably under $700 even with the GPUs.

Laptops should be over 20 years to run linux. -proffesional gentoo compiler
