Reading in the comments that the pilot never aired?? Because i remember seeing the show on TV, and the first episode was how they made the deal to trade their souls for 'A year at the top'. I was a kid with a new cassette recorder, and somewhere in my collections is an old tape with this song on it, recorded by pushing the machine right up against the TV speaker. It was just a short summer replacement series, 4 episodes I think, and I was SOOO disappointed when it didn't continue as a regular show in the fall.

WHAT a GREAT piece of trivia this is...on SO many levels! Thanks for posting, Don....I JUST found out that you and Josh were in this unaired pilot before the show finally made it to air (2-3 years later???) with just Paul and Greg. Loved the song...I JUST bought the album on eBay!! Here's my favorite part - All four of you guys...on a show about selling your soul to the DEVIL...TWO of you came from Godspell...and TWO of you from Jesus Christ Superstar. Huh??? Huh?

Yeah, I vaguely remember this song from the late 1960s. it really captures the ethos of that late, 60s Rock ‘n’ roll, When Rock ‘n’ roll became a good bit more melodically sophisticated. of course as a music school student I’m going to tell you that it could’ve used a lot more development in the build up, and then perhaps one extra iteration in the chorus… But what the hell, you had something of a hit with it, and it’s 55 years too late for the critique. The best to you, Mr. Scardino.😊

Hmmm...except this song is from the mid-70s...

Hi Mr. Scardino. I don’t know if you’re the same Don Scardino that I’ve recently discovered on the old, CBS Mystery Theater radio shows, but you might be… It’s not that common a last name for a performing artist. I can’t verify it visually, not because of your aging, but because at this point, I’m almost totally blind, having spent most of my life as legally blind, before now. your voice is somewhat similar too, but the old radio shows would of course be of someone’s Younger voice in the 1970s. So why am I making this comment?… Not totally sure… But as A teenager, back in the 1970s, I almost became obsessive about the musical Godspell, after seeing it in the Washington DC company, at Ford’s Theatre. I noticed when looking at your Facebook profile, that scotch Byerly, who I remember from that company (He REALLY tore up that show!), and I thought that might be the same guy when I came across the name among your Facebook friends… and If you’re that same Don Scardino. Were you one of the original, Carnegie Mellon university crew of Godspell, or did you join it in New York?… I knew Don Swenson, who was with the show, in some of its early running in days, and a number of other cast members from different companies and iterations as well. Me nowadays?… I am a former, ne’er-do-well, New York City actor (We are Legion.), who is now living in South Florida, where most good New Yorkers go in their afterlife. So I don’t know, just felt like giving you a “Hey You”, or something, while I am sitting around waiting for various medical appointments for eye surgery… a side story all its own. would be awesome if you could answer my questions, but just felt like saying “hi” anyway. Ryan West

Hey Ryan, I am Guilty as charged! I loved doing those CBS Mystery Radio shows as the producer, Himan Brown, insisted we do them “live” like the old days. Even though we were taping them for a later broadcast date. Still, it was fun to work with so many great actors and the genius who produced all the sound effects. His name, sadly, I don’t remember, but he was a true and original foley artist. I remember Scotch fondly, a great guy, and I know we did the show together for awhile. I did over 1000 performances as Jesus over the course of about 5 years or so. It was a wonderful thing to be a part of; it reached so many people’s hearts. So thanks for remembering! Best, Don

Is this a Kinoscope? I thought the show with shot on videotape?
@donscardino9777 Жыл бұрын
The pilot episode, which is what this clip was taken from, was shot on film. In fact the musical sequence was shot by the great Vilmos Zsigmond (Deer Hunter, Close Encounters, etc.). Might have been his first D.P. job in the U.S. The series was shot on tape, as a multicam comedy, with a few different cast members.

@@EliteWorksATeBay Unfortunately, I do not. I didn’t continue with the show beyond the pilot (which never aired, by the way). Your best bet would be to contact Norman Lear’s office or CBS and see if the later episodes still exist. I know that an album was released with “Greg and Paul” under the name “A Year at the Top”, I believe. Good luck!
