Thanks for this! Can you please confirm that the built in web-cam works with ubuntu? I ask because I tried to install opencore legacy on my 17" 2011 mbp and everything worked well - Except - the webcam, which was a known drawback of OCLP.

I'm not sure it will work on every model, but it does not hurt to make an Ubuntu USB stick and boot to it. Instead of installing, click "Try Now" and open up the Cheese app to see if the webcam works.

I only follow this channel because of Auren, so to all at @compumatterllc be advised that I think this style of presentation is laughable. It's hard to take you seriously when you contradict each other, and don't even know the answers to the questions. Also, I think the CEO's nature came off as sarcastic & narcissistic ... e.g. I don't use hot keys, then he goes on to mention two & even later uses Ctrl + V to paste the clipped image capture. Anyway, I'm outta here!
@compumatterllc
@compumatterllc 4 күн бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts Michael. I'm the CEO you spoke of. We certainly agree with you regarding Auren. She's family to us and a real gem. As for contradicting each other. It's bound to happen. Though we agree on most things we often learn from each other. It is the benefit of multiple minds. That said, I'm glad you found some comedy in it. We try to bring some comedic levity to these things and try not to take ourselves too seriously. What you heard was honesty regarding my initial statement about hotkeys. At that moment I didn't think I did use hotkeys or at least not much. As the podcast went on I realized just how unconscious a behavior it actually was for me. That's all there was to that. As for my being sarcastic - guilty as charged. Narcissistic.... that was tough to hear. You hit a soft spot and forced me to reflect upon that as we move forward with these podcasts. I certainly don't want to be that or be perceived as that. Thanks for your constructive criticism.

Make sure you are on the latest update if possible. The 24.04 upgrade is also out now and may be more reliable for that, but I have not had the time to personally test it yet. If neither help, I have heard people can install "brightness-controller" through the terminal.

I am almost positive they did some changes to their firewalls regarding SMTP ports 465, 587, 25. If you were able to send from their portal (most likely a white listed IP address of theirs) but not from your client (your public IP and not Comcast) I can bet it was firewall ports. Especially since it seemed to have been quickly and quietly. Intern's fault haha

This was one of the channels that helped me in my journey to get Linux on a Macbook Air. Keep it up. I do want to pose a question perhaps for another episode. I'm not a user of Windows, neither personal computer nor work, but I got family that does. What happens with these system screenshots that Windows is going to do? Does it copy things like passwords on screen or stored? I am really worried about these really dodgy things and I can't find a straight answer.

Great to hear, you do not have to fix what isn't broken. That being said, working off an older operating system does come with some security risks, so long as you are aware of that and able to do what you need to do on the system.

When installing Ubuntu, do you recall if you checked the "install third party drivers" section? If not, try reinstalling and see if checking that helps. If it is slow, I would also recommend upgrading your hard drive to a solid state drive (SSD) if you haven't already.

I have a question. I found a used one of these in a box for $10. It won't boot. It is missing both batteries. The keyboard will light up and the fan will span for a several seconds and then it seems to turn off. The LED on the power button will stay on. I've tried reseting the ram and that does nothing. I will note it does chime when I completely remove the batteries. Question will these laptops even boot without the batteries?
@compumatterllc
@compumatterllc 9 күн бұрын
Yes, they will boot with the power cord plugged in and no batteries. Have you opened it up to see if the CMOS battery is plugged in properly? Another thing to try is plugging it in to an external monitor in case the screen is the issue here.

I followed your guide and wasn't able to get it to work, but the only thing I had to do to get it to work after following your instructions was to disable https in my IP / port settings in NGINX (running NGINX Proxy Manager) so NGINX was pointing to myapacheip:myapacheport instead of myapacheip:myapacheport Thank you so much for all of your help. Verify your WiFi password is correct, then also verify you do not have any VPN software or security software with VPN turned on. You can also tether your device using a cell phone and a cable (hotspot tether) or plug the computer into ethernet and search for your model online followed by the word drivers. See if you can find a WiFi driver from the manufacturer's website and install it.
