Before I was big enough to cultivate rode along with Dad and Grandpa. When there was a big patch of cockleburs or button weeds they would drop me off to pull them. Hated those weeds and burdock.

Just curious, is the spacing between rows something typical for organic farming? Or is it more about the soil you have? perhaps both?
@iowaorganicfarmer812826 күн бұрын
@rbfishcs123 row spacing varies with farms but You have to have room to travel down between the crops for cultivation.

The beans look good. Will you cultivate again to "lay them by'?!
@iowaorganicfarmer8128Ай бұрын
@justincase2830 will for sure run them again, maybe a 4th. Depends on the rains. We have been getting rain about every day or two which promotes weed growth. As soon as I see a decently dry day in the Forcast I will try and run again.

Have you ever considered planting in to rye and roller crimping it? Every county needs a decent drill and roller crimper that can be checked out by local operators. There are also grants for trying out different things. A nice cover crop that winter kills, except for cereal rye. On beans, it’s really painless.
Yes, it did not work for me the 2 years I tried it.
@LtColDaddy71Ай бұрын
@@iowaorganicfarmer8128 I tried planting after rolling, and it was a disaster. It has to be a standing cover. The closing system set up has never worked with the same configuration twice in a row. I always have to try a few out and see what is doing the best job. Very simple planter. No row cleaners, coulters, and planters with the wheels between the row units are an issue. Not much organic around me. I wish there was.

Greetings from Europe! I am also an organic farmer. you do a good job! how is the infrastructure over there for organic farmers? is it easy to sell your organic soyabeans and other organic products? what is the price for 1.000kg soyabeans from your farm? Do you have many organic certification companies in the usa? how many acres of farmland you need in the usa to make a living for a family of 6 people? i am so interested in organic farming in the us
@iowaorganicfarmer81283 ай бұрын
A lot of great questions, thanks. The organic facilities are few and spread out. We have a feed producer within 20 mins that takes the corn. The Soybeans, on the other hand, have to be shipped. I usually ship them over 5 hours by truck. Corn is expected to be $2 lower for the next harvest into 2025 ($6/bushel). Soybeans should be about the same price $18. We are running fewer acres this year, around 200. Most seed to alfalfa/ grass mix, only 30 acres of Soybeans for 2024 harvest.
@michi29663 ай бұрын
@@iowaorganicfarmer8128 I wish you a great harvest for 2024. i didn´t expect that your prices for organic soyabeans in the USA are lower as ours here in europe. We will have 20-22 Dollar per Bushel Soyabeans. we also get subvension from the state for planting soyabeans and also extra subvension for organic farming near the standard subvention per acre. i made a few researches on the internet to check farms for sale in the US. actually there are not many farms for sale and only a few farms are over 1000 acres where you could cultivate soybeans. i think from a 500 acre organic farm in the US you could provide for a family with 6 people? Your machine park looks a bit older, do you find it difficult to buy new machines as a farmer? could you plant soyabeans in Texas? or they wouldn t grow there?
@iowaorganicfarmer81283 ай бұрын
@michi2966 I don't know what the "subvension's" are you refer to. I like the older tractors, they do the same job as the newer ones, and I work on them myself. No dealer expenses. There are farms for sale, but they're expensive too. Finding one close to fit in the program is more of a challenge. I'm in pretty hilly area, so roading the equipment can be big downside of far away farms.
@michi29663 ай бұрын
@@iowaorganicfarmer8128 Sorry, subvension´s are financial support from the goverment towards the farmers. Yeah, new tractors are extrem expansive right now. even second hand ones... on july i start my 3 month american jorney with my camper. i also check farms on east texas. 500 to 1000 acres with timberland and tillable land would be my dream in life.
