Just found this video and it's amazing! Definitely the most comprehensive video I've seen on the PR locations. Thank you for your research!

First Avenue used to be a Greyhound bus station back in the day before it was a night club. Notice, the large doors.

never realized until KZbin just how much of the movie was actually shot in LA -- definitely recognized the bridges though

I recently visited Paisley Park and was able to visit many of the historical sights from Purple Rain. It was beyond amazing and I was almost overwhelmed. Thank you for clarifying the alley from First Avenue. It’s nothing there. I searched around the entire premises and was convinced it had to be in another close by area. This video was amazing! Thank you💜💜

Appoloina arrives, definitely not Minneapolis but someone who made the set saw the skyways and took notes. I LOLed at the fact they didnt use the real lake Minnetonka for the scene. "Purify yourself in the waters of lake Minnetonka, just dont drink any"
@smh932 жыл бұрын
This was super interesting to see. And it reminded me that my uncle worked on the set for the film. And the wood that was used for the flooring in the kitchen set for the kid’s house was actually repurposed to build the dock at my family’s cabin off the arrowhead trail. 🥰

So many speed records set there! I remember my older brother had the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records, and I remember reading in it how a car call the Blue Flame set the land speed record at that time there.....

The completely unnecessary references to BLM protests detracts from the value of this nice video effort. Disappointing.
@thesolitaryadventurer Жыл бұрын
You don't think the repurposing of a youth community center - created to help an area that saw racial aggression - into a police station... and that police station being the site of racial aggression some 50 years later is of interest...? Disappointing.
@christophertracy2807 Жыл бұрын
@@thesolitaryadventurer Not on this clip. It is unnecessary to force race and the farce of BLM into everything.THAT is disappointing if you want to call something or someone disappointing. This is supposed to be about early locations of Prince's life - several decades before BLM bullshit was even thought of. No one clicked on this link for that.
@thesolitaryadventurer Жыл бұрын
@@christophertracy2807 One line of text at the site of the very race riots that inspired a community center to be built. And that same community center was scrapped due to racial tensions and turned into a police station. I stand by putting it in the video. And I don't believe one section of the video negates the whole thing. Given Prince himself was a supporter of BLM, I don't hold an opinion on whether it is farcical or not. I don't mention BLM specifically. Get off your high horse.
@christophertracy2807 Жыл бұрын
@@thesolitaryadventurer Complete liberal bullshit. All that and more doesn't make it about Prince. It is not a high horse - it is high intelligence and knowledge of the truth. Look into it.

This man has educated me more about Prince than anyone else. As I have become a fan recently of Prince, I have been watching Purple Rain, and oddly that scene with Billy and Morris talking, I actually wondered if it was LA instead of Minneapolis?

Thank you - it's really my pleasure to keep the spotlight on such a unique artist. There is another video (link in the description) that an LA fan made of the locations there. I was unable to make an LA one so I'm grateful someone else has taken the time to do so. For a film that put Minneapolis on the map, it sure isn't full of Minneapolis shots!
Thank you kindly. The pace that Minnesota changes its buildings, who knows how long some of these locations will continue to remain identifiable. I'm glad I was able to document them at this stage.

The only reason why they shot more of the film in los angles California it was because due to the cold weather it was like 30 below at the time of filming especially the part where Appolonia had to purify herself in the water of lake Minnetonka that scene had to be shot in los angles California because it was more warmer there then Minneapolis
@thesolitaryadventurer2 жыл бұрын
I can't even imagine such cold conditions! I've since heard Appollonia say she caught hypothermia in the two takes filmed in Minnesota - her jumping in. When she comes out of the water, it is LA as you rightly say. Grateful of some California warmth no doubt! Thanks for watching.

I am of the same generation as Prince and grew up in the Mpls. area. Prince was a common household name as went through college and into my professional life but I wasn't a huge fan until after his passing. Then I became obsessed with all things Prince. Do you have any info on a scene being filmed on Pierce Butler Route in St. Paul. MN? I was out and about in Mid-October 1982 and there is an overpass On Grand Ave. where Pierce Butler Route goes underneath. There were lights out and all sorts of filming gear and trailers and film crew. I asked what was going on and someone said they're filming a Prince movie. I didn't't think anything about it then but that encounter has stuck in my mind for the last 40 years.
@thesolitaryadventurer2 жыл бұрын
I had hoped someone would jump on this and fill in some details... Alas. If it is mid-Oct 1983, it is likely Purple Rain. And I'd put money on the scenes around The Time and Appollonia 6 rehearsals. I was never able to track down their exact location but out towards St Paul would have been reasonable to me. If it is definitely 1982... the dates don't match up perfectly but he did film anitem called 'The Second Coming' which was meant to be a film. It is sitting in The Vault (and in some bootleggers' hands) and was an early attempt to work out the kinks in the movie filming concept. I'd argue that it pioneered his ideas and established what he would need to create a proper motion picture. So without it, we might likely not have Purple Rain. I know that's not conclusive but I hope it puts some items in context. Thank you for watching!

@thesolitaryadventurer2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind words. I used the Estate documentation following his passing to work out what property he owned as well as accounts from during his life around where he lived. As time passes, I believe the accomplishment of Paisley Park and what Prince managed to do as a (largely) independent musician will be his overriding legacy. I wanted to document some of this as close to his passing as possible before the buildings changed hands and changed appearance. Though time has passed since these videos were made, I feel very privileged to have made these. Thank you for viewing.

Personally I don't find it disorienting but I appreciate it would be for some. That's the last of the videos now. I hope you enjoyed them overall. Best wishes!
