When I googled "what to expect psychology postdoctoral fellowship interviews," I was predicting I'd have to slog through various overly simplified/irrelevant resources. Instead, I was greeted by your video as my first search hit, and it is the PERFECT jumping off point for my prep. Thank you for your incisive comparisons about the flavor of internship vs. fellowship interviews. You covered everything I needed to know in under 10 minutes. Go you! I hope you're enjoying your fellowship training at Brown. They are lucky to have you. :) (P.S. I also trained in school psychology!)

I'm glad it was helpful! I felt the same way when applying, so I figured I'd share my experience! And I'm always happy to help a fellow school psych person :)

@@DocGirlRambles Exactly! While I know that the application/interview process in more future oriented because you're positioning yourself as an early career psychologist, it was helpful to get a sense from you about what direction the questions tend to take to probe for the things that many sites find important for their decision-making process.

I love your videos. I am a teacher considering studying to be a School Psych. Your videos are much more in depth and informative than anything else out there. I love hearing about particular cases or examples of your work. It is so hard to understand the reality of a profession until you are in it. Personal statement now: I am concerned about the heavy amount of standardized testing compared to counseling.

Thanks for watching! Yeah the testing is a large part of it and you really have to know what’s expected of the role in different districts to even know if having a counseling caseload is possible.

Any advice for an international student wanting to pursue school psychology?
@DocGirlRambles
@DocGirlRambles 3 ай бұрын
I would recommend thinking about what goals you have for what you wish to learn in the program and look into the ones that meet those goals. Specifically for being an International student, I would see if programs can connect you with current international students. It would be really important to understand how programs support international students.

@DocGirlRambles
@DocGirlRambles 7 ай бұрын
There are school psych programs that offer pediatric/neuropsychology specializations so you would get the foundational school psych training with additional neuropsych training. I've also seen people seek neuropsych practica, internships, and postdocs to get that additional training. It can definitely be done but the focus on more neuro training in your program will definitely depend on the program you choose!

That's a good question! This video is specific to doctoral internship applications, so the essays are very different. I've been meaning to make a video about writing your personal statement and haven't gotten around to it. I would check out this video from @Renae's Corner about writing personal statements. Every program will ask for something different, but generally, the advice Tanesha gives applies for grad school for psychology broadly, in my opinion. I'll have to post one with my perspective soon, but check hers out first! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGewkpt3eK9qeZYsi=3agiD7yaJKNH2C3u

I’m thinking about taking a year or so off before going to get my master's and I’ve been really stressed and second-guessing myself about this. I’m so close to being completely burnt out, and even though I have a 3.8 GPA, I don’t have much else that would boost my chances of acceptance, or make me a competitive applicant. I don’t have much work experience etc. I think taking a year off will allow me to get this experience and boost my CV. How do you get into work or internships in this field with just a bachelor's though? Also, how do you get over guilt or the fear of taking time off being the wrong decision?
@DocGirlRambles
@DocGirlRambles 8 ай бұрын
I think taking that time off to prevent burnout is such a great idea! I needed those years to give my brain a break. If you have an idea of what you'd like to study or populations you're interested in working with, see if there are any post-bacc opportunities in that area. If you search "post-bac [interested field]" you should get some results! Otherwise, it might be helpful to find research assistant positions that are doing work in your area. Even if you're not interested in research, it can be helpful to be in that world. I get through the guilt remembering that grad school isn't going anywhere! You have time to figure out who you are outside of being a student and not feeling like you're always in grind mode. You deserve rest and that was a huge motivator for me during that time off! If it helps, I took 3 years off, and half of my cohort was actually older than me. Everyone is on their own timeline and starting later doesn't put you at a disadvantage.

Would you be willing to share your example cover letter with me? I’m applying for internship next year at mainly children’s hospitals (as a school psych applicant) and I would love to see how you made school psychology come across as a strength and asset rather than as a detriment (because that’s how I feel sometimes in a clinical world…)
@DocGirlRambles
@DocGirlRambles 9 ай бұрын
Hey! The letters I cover in this video are the templates that I actually finished and sent in. I think that the main parts to remember is to use the information from the training site's brochure to ensure your experiences and goals match with what they offer and are looking for in trainees. The best advice I received about making my training in school psychology an asset was to reduce the number of references to me coming from a school psychology program. It's not something you're trying to or can hide. They'll see it in your application but the more you can do not to focus their attention on it the better! Speak more to "clinical experiences in school settings" and how that work helps you understand a child's educational context in their broader care when working in a hospital/medical setting. Also if you haven't watched this video, I would recommend it. All 3 of the panelists I spoke with are now psychologists working in different settings and come from school psych programs! kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4TWgI15mJaCedk

@@DocGirlRambles Thank you for the thoughtful reply! This is really good advice. I really enjoyed the series you did on applying for internship, and loved the advice that Dr. Crossing gave on saying “in addition to my rich school-based experience”. This year I had a full time practicum placement at a community health center doing individual therapy and assessments with a clinical psychologist. Next year I’ll be doing a practicum at a Pediatric Gender Health clinic and at a LGBTQ+ Youth Community Center since my interests are in working with sexual and gender minority youth across settings. I’ll try to focus on my community based experiences in the letter while noting things that are relevant from schools (like individual and group therapy experiences, systems work, etc) Thanks again!

@@JakiraJakira78 These sound like awesome clinical experiences! I'm excited for your practicum next year, it sounds like that will be incredibly enriching. I would add that highlighting our assessment experience is often an asset since it makes up so much of what we do in schools. We tend to have a bit more assessment experience than students in other programs, aside from neuropsych. Just something else that school psych is doing right! Best of luck to you! :)

Hi Briana!! Amazing video!! I graduated in May 2023 with a BA in Psychology. I plan to become a school psychologist also, but want to get my Masters/Sixth-Year Certificate and not a doctorate. I originally thought I would be going to graduate school this fall, but due to me being rejected from programs, plus other life circumstances, I probably won't be going until Fall 2025. I have felt bad about myself for potentially taking 2 years off, so hearing that you took 3 years off and still got into doctoral programs made me feel better. Best of luck with the rest of your program!! :)

Hi! Congratulations! 🎉 I wanted to ask you how did you decide between adult and child psychology? Im torn between both. Also, what experiences and clinical practicum sites do you suggest to make me a competitive applicant for internship in pediatrics/child psychology? Thank you in advance!
@DocGirlRambles
@DocGirlRambles 10 ай бұрын
Hi thank you! My answer probably isn't helpful because I never really considered adult psychology. I knew I wanted to work with children and that working with their families would be the extent of working with adults, which is why I went into school psychology. I knew children would be the focus. My only advice about practicum experiences is maybe get as much variety as you can. I got the feedback when I didn't match in phase 1 last year that I was a great applicant, but I didn't have any experience in a hospital. If you're considering settings outside what you've done in the past, it's not impossible to get there, but it might make the difference between you and someone with a similar background/profile.
