I never could never understand why the PRR built these massive locomotives and then equipped them with tiny tenders.
@MrMiz111322 сағат бұрын
From what I've read, the tenders were designed with running the mainline at speed with access to track pans.

I loved your narration during the tour. It would be nice if the museum had an individual who like you could lecture to a group of people and give such info to the group. There is so much history behind these machines that most do not appreciate. My husband and I stayed at the caboose motel and we tried to conceive our first child in a caboose. See how we are into trains.

Hi there!! Museum member here. Thanks for covering our little museum!! First i want to ammend one thing from the video. At this time we politely ask visitors to NOT climb on equipment without permission from museum staff. With that out of the way, You are correct, most work days are Mondays and occasionally Saturdays depending on who is available. The diesel is fully operational, although last time i was there we were allowing guests to blow the horn and a gasket was blown out of it. Not sure if it's been fixed yet or not. The B&O caboose is actually a Chessie car and i dont believe it ever ran for B&O proper. Work is ongoing on that car. The Pennsy N5 is "done", but still has some minor work to be done. Last i heard, the other caboose is in discussion as to what is to be done with it paint-wise. My understanding is that Penn Central is rhe most likelt option at the moment (hence the painted on markings). The flat car we are hoping to use as a 'stage' of sorts for public events. Its rough. The station itself needs a new roof which we are currently fundraising for. There are also a few other pieces of equipment in the tan sheds outside the station. Again, thanks for stopping by!!!

Thanks for the correction and update, I'll be sure to make a note of that. It sounds like you guys are doing a lot of great work!

Nothing beyond cosmetically to the best of my knowledge. The locomotive is owned by the Western New York railway historical society. And they intend to move it to a shelter location. They have closer to downtown buffalo, but they've had issues with being able to move it over Norfolk Southerns tracks. It has friction bearings and apparently, Norfolk Southern is balking at allowing it over their line.

It's a sad shame that this old girl hasn't been restored and put into service as an excursion train at least by now because sometimes everything old can be new again !
@cmb3289828 күн бұрын
Both engines are working now courtesy of retired diesel mechanic Melvin Meeder, and you are right. The diesel is chain driven. There are three more items not shown in the video: the speeder in the small shed by the station, the army rail bus built by Brookville Equipment in the 1940s, and the old turn of the century Pennsylvania railroad flatcar which we got with the diesel from the now closed NRG plant in Niles, OH back in 2021. As to the N8 caboose, that is under a restoration project. The black spray paint is to indicate its PennCentral number. The caboose needs new exterior metalwork. That piece is unique because it has NYC trucks on it even though Pennsylvania built it. When the merger happened, PennCentral was not concerned what the old brands were. If the trucks fit, then they were used. You are also right: the guys are there on Mondays to work. They usually get there around 11:00 AM and will give tours for donations. We are also open by appointment as many of us have keys to the station. We just need some notice to plan, especially for me since I'm in two other train groups besides BLRHS. Come again!
