the night seems to come by very quick huh? and I suppose the road dashes are made with the playfield graphics while the rest is pure background color shift! The bus is player0 quadrupled and the truck player1 - my guess is all looks to have been done in Batari basic! I figured because of how the intro bus looks!

Nope, 8 bits. The playfield graphics were being used, so that's why the graphics look chunky. Also the CPU inside the console is actually an 8 bit chip, The MOS 6507, a stripped down version of the 6502.

There's not a lot of CPU time available to micromanage the audio channels due to how the video hardware works, and the VCS has some significant limitations in what frequencies are available. But check out Pitfall II for a retail game with some fairly impressive sound. Admittedly, it is using a coprocessor to belch out sound commands faster than the system's CPU can.

@@CptJistuce Ah yes, Pitfall II was one of my favorite games and I noticed that it had a superior sound experience. I think with that game they already figured out to use the limited hardware capabilities in the most efficient way. I was really big for an Atari game. Oh, so the cartridge contained the co-processrór?
