2:04 ugh tell me about it. 12 books in Dutch (of which I only learned halfway through that I did not have to write book reports on them - we’d have a 1-on-1 oral exam on them with the teacher at the end of our last year), 6 English books (with extensive book reports and if you fail any you can’t do your final exams), and 3 German books + poetry and short stories (also an oral exam). In 3 years. + all the other homework. I read like 8??? Of the Dutch books (read summaries of the rest, luckily I mostly got asked about ones I did read but I did have to bluff through questions about De Komst van Joachim Stiller), I did read all of the English books, and I struggled through the German books before cheating by reading translated versions. But ugh. (We did get to choose which books to read from lists for Dutch and English at least. They’d lock out certain books behind years - I.e. you can’t read a year 4 book like the hunger games in year 5 (this took place in year 4-6), and sometimes give qualifications (i’m in year 6, we had to do a book from after 1900 for our first book and then one from before 1900 for our second) but aside from that you’re pretty free to pick from the list. I picked The Book Thief, The Maze Runner, Frankenstein, A Christmas Carol, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, and Emma for the English books, if anyone was curious. Audiobooks are your FRIEND for things like this, especially for older books - couldn’t have gotten through Frankenstein or Emma without them)
