No .. glow fuel is already about 110 octane.. so the one thing you don't want to do is lower the compression but what you do want to do is use a good high octane gas like 93 or higher.. I was using 100LL aviation gas but the 94 octane pump gas seems to work just as good..

the glow carbs are designed for glow fuel.. the porting is designed to deliver 4 or 5 times as much fuel compared to gasoline.. even though some people have got them to run.. and so have I , but they have never got them to run successfully.. and I have certainly never seen one fly.. along with if there are any rubber seals in the carb, like the needle valves.. then gasoline will destroy that rubber as it is meant to be used with methanol.. when I first started this , I had met this Chinese guy that told me it could be done.. but he also said .. It is all about the carburation... you need the right carburetor for the right fuel.. and he was right.. with using a glow plug with gasoline you need good gas with no ethanol added.. then you need to add about 15 percent ethanol.. the reason is so you can control the amount of ethanol.. this is important because the glow plug needs the ethanol to work so the mixture must be carefully controlled@@wildan1340

All residual oil is going to run back into the cylinders, if it is able to "burn it" it could run hot as to much oil creates more heat in order to burn it. This is not a good idea for any reason

Why would they engineer the throttle arms to hit each other ???
@jeffgrain1417
@jeffgrain1417 Жыл бұрын
well they didn't exactly engineer it that way.. that is a standard warbro carb design.. fits pretty much any engine.. you would normally use aftermarket arms,, two different arms ,, one a bit taller than the other to offset your linkage hookup.. just that the muffler gets in the way of a taller one... so I used two short ones.. and they run into each other.. so I had to shorten one..

Hi Gary thanks for your interest.. but first off ,, nitro carbs are not a good carb for gasoline.. simply being that a nitro carb is designed to allow 3 times the amount of fuel to the engine than what a gasoline engine needs.. not to mention the seals in a nitro carb to not react well to gasoline since they are meant for alcohol .. two completely different fuels.. my carb for smaller engines was the evolution brand which are no longer made.. I tried the NGH ones but they are just pure junk.. the OS carbs would likely work fine ,, I just have not tried one yet.. very expensive and you would need to make an adapter to mount it to a nitro engine.. I have not really looked at the saito versions yet.. but from what I have seen they only seem to use the negative pulse of the engine to pump fuel... not sure how well that works.. but they don't seem to sell a lot of them.. for now it would seem that we are limited to what we can fit a warbro carb to.. check my other videos.. Hi Mike.. thanks for your interest.. but the parts for all of my engines are custom made here.. you would need to take the carb out and take the engine to someone who can machine.. made from aluminum it was turned down to fit into the engine.. then the inside was bored out to the same measurement as the inside of the original nitro carb.. then a face large enough to support a warbro carb was machined.. then the holes to mount the warbro where drilled in.. it is all one piece,, sounds simple enough.. and it is to a machinist ... best way to describe it.. like a funnel but with a flat top.. actually I just got the plane down and cleaned her up ,, got the engine tuned in for flight.. been about a year since her last flight... and she has done many since that first maiden flight..

" may contain up to " that is the catch.. you don't know day to day.. so the plan is start with pure fuel then add.. adjust according to engine performance.. little up or down.. the G5 is the best plug to use.. it was designed for gas engines.. stay away from NGH carb's they are pure crap

Are you sure it is an OS "F" plug and not an OS "G5" plug? I am suprised it works so well if it is the normal F plug for methanol
@jeffgrain1417
@jeffgrain1417 3 жыл бұрын
Oh wow.. testing my memory.. but I would have to say it likely was.. back then I was doing a lot of variations of testing.. The reason is this.. I was using regular pump gas.. I normally use 100LL avgas.. and methanol will not mix with avgas.. Now to get a type F plug to work you need a higher mix of methanol to the gas.. like say 30% .. A type F is a very " cold " plug and will react more to the m/ethanol than say an A3 which is a very hot plug. see the included links below.. Who ever wrote that article did an amazing job explaining glow plugs.. You still need some methanol when using a G5 plug but just not as much, I typically get the 94 octane gas at the pump and then mix in 10 or 15% methanol to use with a G5.. This is why OS says to use just regular gas because at the pump you will see a sign that says, " may contain up to 15% ethanol .. This would account for the various reports I have heard on the OS ggt10 and 15 having issues running.. sometimes excellent and others not so good.. variations in the ethanol content in the gas.. So I buy 94 octane gas , no ethanol , add 15% methanol or ethanol.. and 30:1 oil.. this way I know how much ethanol is in the fuel.. I also use a high grade of synthetic oil.. In the video of the four planes running in my yard.. that engine would have been running the mentioned fuel mix and a G5 plug which it flies on these days.. The above video was just me messing around with fuel mixes to see what I can and can't do.. The second link is an excellent demonstration of how the platinum reacts to a methanol / oxygen environment.. Once you have an understanding of how this works you will understand how a glow engine works.. The primary type of fuel used is not really as important as getting the right conditions for combustion.. The methanol/ ethanol is used as a catalysis to the platinum in the plug to start the combustion and that in turn will ignite the gasoline.. www.hooked-on-rc-airplanes.com/rc-glow-plugs.html kzbin.info/www/bejne/fITHc3Vnq6d3gbs
@Hans45
@Hans45 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeffgrain1417 Ok, but does the catalys reaction with platinum work with only ethanol and no methanol? It does not make sense to me that the g5 glow plug needs methanol to run as it is advertised for gas engines. Maybe the g5 uses the ethanol in the gasoline used nowadays to make the reaction
@jeffgrain1417
@jeffgrain1417 3 жыл бұрын
@@Hans45 methanol or ethanol it does not matter, I have tested both.. just about any alcohol will react with the platinum.. even the moonshine I make.. ethanol... if I could get the purity up higher than 90% ,, I might try using it.. but hate wasting good drinking alcohol :-)) And yes.. the G5 does need some amount to m/ethanol to react with the platinum in the plug.. because there is no guarantee on the ethanol content in gas , would explain why some people have had issues with the GGT10 & 15.. today at the pump gas might have 15% ,, next week it might not have any.. that is why I buy the 94 octane and add my own.. A G5 plug will not run on just straight Gas.. this is why I don't use my AvGas. it will not mix with m/ethanol .. I need to add the m/ethanol to get the plug to work.. so that is why the glow engine conversions use 94 octane pump gas..

The ethanol I use is called bio-flame purchased at homehardware.. it is used for those decorative table top burners etc... or you can buy methanol at homedepot or places like that.. and it is suppose to be 100% pure.. As far as mixing nitro with gas ,, so long as it is pure nitromethane then no problem.. if you mean mixing nitro glow fuel with gas then yes that is a problem.. the type of oil in glow fuel " castor or the synthetic version " does not mix with gasoline.. and will separate.. It is a strange thing of chemistry at a molecular level.. 2 cycle oil will not mix with m/ethanol ..try putting some in a sample of glow fuel it will not mix.. but it will with gas.. and the m/ethanol will mix with gas.. so at the atomic level the 3 parts will bond together.. way beyond me being able to explain how or why..

Hi Jeff. Good work there. I just came across this clip and I noticed that in an older reply, you had said that av-gas and methanol don't mix. They won't on their own, but will if a suitable mixing agent is used. My father and uncle raced dirt track speedway saloons in the late 70s (Here is Australia), and before going full methanol, they used a mixture of av-gas, methanol and methyl benzine (toluene). I have since read about others using acetone for the same purpose for dirt bikes etc, but have no experience with that. One thing about the toluene, is that I remember my uncle saying that too much methyl benzine was 'hard on the spark plugs', though I never asked why. Cheers, Robert.

thanks for the excellent reply Robert.. This video was from over 6 years ago.. I have made a lot of changes and improvements since then.. The only reason I wan'ted to add the methanol was for the glow plug.. since the platinum in the glow plug relies on the methanol to create the reaction to keep the glow plug working. So I just stepped back to the 94 octane.. for ethanol free gas and then add a controlled amount.. so far it seems to work very well.. this same engine is now in a Carl Goldberg bipe and goes like hell...

for an os fs-70 I would say to use an evolution 10cc carb if they where still being made.. but that line of production has been dis-continued. A warbro carb for a 10cc engine would likely work but the only one I know of would be from the RCGF 10cc brand. just about any carb from a 10cc gas engine should work. but stay away from the NGH line of carbs as they are garbage.. I purchased two of them and have yet to get them to work properly..

People have been asking where to buy a conversion kit.. I recently found a place in the UK .. that seems to make a lot of conversion kits.. here is the link.. www.morrisminimotors.com/conversion-kits.html

this is the 5th in a series of nitro to gas conversions.. In this video I show how the engine can be switched from a spark plug to a glow plug and still basically run the same.. some minor fuel adjustments would be needed.. but other than that.. the engine runs the same on spark or glow ignition..
