I love this concept. Of humans being a keystone species that promotes the ecosystem rather than degrading it
@AgroecologicalSystems

That’s a cool way to think about it. I often think about words like indigenous at what point can humans be considered native to an area. Maybe it’s when we become that keystone role in the ecosystem.

Good job. Thanks for your time. My son and our two families are currently working on a small homestead/farm. Gonna be doing a lot of what you talked about here. In addition I have quite a few other things that I have been thinking about doing. It’s going to be all organic. This has been a dream of mine since I was a young child. Finally making it happen at 62! Having my son and two grandchildren next door is priceless!! Good luck I will be watching and share my experience as it unfolds. Terry

This is going to be our first year trying rotational grazing for our sheep. I'm looking at deer plot seeds as a base for the fields ( radish, turnips, chicory, clover,, and grains). Any suggestions on what to add for good grazing fields?

What keeps the chickens from eating everything in the garden? My chickens would absolutely destroy my garden.
@AgroecologicalSystems
@AgroecologicalSystems 4 күн бұрын
You can protect certain plants with big rocks or logs around the base. Some people use wire mesh or other barriers to prevent them from completely destroying certain plants. Larger woody plants can withstand the chickens, if their roots are protected by big rocks. If you look at the Edible Acres channel they have several good videos about this, and how they keep their hens busy with food scraps, sacrificial plants, etc. I’m still learning but it sorta becomes a different kind of garden. I wouldn’t let them into a nice tended kitchen garden, except for maybe at the end of the season to scratch everything up and reset the garden for next season.

Many thanks for the video! As someone who had chickens in the yard too long without revitalizing it with seeds to encourage more insects and plant growth, this is a great plan. My only possible suggestion is going to the local grocery store and asking for expired/rotting foods. The foods that are just beyond expiration may still be fine for the chickens and the foods too far gone might attract insects for the chickens. (I know that chickens eat compost but that takes too much manpower) Not sure if its a full-proof idea but I think its worth considering. CHEERS!

Як варіант мені здається привабливим засіяти ділянку як ви, але взяти трохи більше землі під курник і розділити загін на 2 частини, міняючи залежно від сидуації місце випасу курей, отримуючи пасовище все ще біля дому

Just enjoy your farm as nothing is sustainable nor ethical according to PETA. Just be a normal chicken person or don't make these videos.
