I guess that one loop part isn't as hard as it looks. Then again I have done minigolf courses with loops on them.

What damage do cicadas even actually do to trees? As far as I know they only feed on tree root nutrients as nymphs but adults don't do a lot of eating. It would make sense if the sheer weight of the amount of cicadas on a small tree did damage but besides that?

Female cicadas cut slits in slender twigs at the ends of tree branches and stems of some woody shrubs to create a place to lay their eggs. While they do no serious harm to any healthy mature tree, very young trees that were planted within the last couple of years, or have a trunk diameter of 2 inches or less, and older trees that are unhealthy or stressed, are at risk. More details are on our website: mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/tree-plant-care/plant-care-resources/2024-cicada-emergence.

Omg thank you for that. In the history of my life I've never seen ppl do this. And none of the trees were ever harmed but for some reason ppl are doing this now. Not sure why. I know those bugs harm trees but never have I seen any young trees harmed in any way.

What about vegetables like tomato and pepper plants?
@MortonArboretum7 ай бұрын
Vegetable gardens are safe. Cicadas do not have the mouthparts required to chew leaves or stems.

What about shrubs? We have several established flowering shrubs that have smaller branches.
@blorkflorkernorp97737 ай бұрын
You don't have to do anything. Adult cicadas only sing, mate, lay eggs, and die. I've been through several swarms, they're just loud and crunchy under car wheels.

This is what I want to do with my life. I don't want to plant a grove of monoculture trees, I don't want to just specialize in plant species, or just protect ecosystems - I want to help rebuild them! Where has "ecological restoration" been all my life? I searched google, youtube, and other search engines. None of them even mentioned this position. I found it in a random youtube comment of all things! (I'll have to tell that commenter that they've changed my life by mentioning it lol).

You don’t need to go to school for 4 years and incur debt to be an Arborist. Get chainsaw certified, pass the ISA Arborist Certification test, look for apprenticeships.
