Hi, would you tell me if this train goes to JFK airport aerly morning?
@jkrspecnetАй бұрын
No, Long Island Rail Road trains do not go directly to JFK airport, but many do go to LIRR Jamaica Station in Queens, New York City, which is located a few miles to the north of JFK. Train 6005 operates on weekends in the afternoon and arrives at Jamaica at 2:13 PM. From Jamaica Station there is an AirTrain connection to terminals at JFK, e.g., an automated subway-like line. It currently costs $8.25 between JFK and Jamaica station.

More likely the way the C3 coaches were loaded at the previous stations to the east. Speonk station can only platform 4 C3's, so I am guessing that the middle 4 C3's were the ones that were less crowded than the front 4 or rear 4.

Hi Mr. Jim this is Andrea, I probably ask you this question before but I forgot to write it down. what type of dash camera do you own for the type of vehicle you are driving?
@jkrspecnetАй бұрын
Hi Andrea. The Dashcam is a ROVE R2-4K model, about 6 years old. ROVE has a newer version out now, but I don't know what kind of improvements, if any, that they have made over the older model. I have it installed centered right under the rear view mirror of my 2024 Ford F-150 Lariat, so from that location we get a pretty good high up and wide angle view. I have it also tilted up just enough so we don't usually see the hood of the truck. It is also set for 5 minute loop recording, so when I make a KZbin video I have to try and seamlessly splice together the 5 minute segments, using Mac iMovie.

According to my LIRR sources the Cannonball being held at Westhampton was related to the fundraiser being held in Southampton for Donald Trump. Something about getting a "special" SUV in place. I don't know if this also affected eastbound vehicle traffic on Sunrise Highway, but I did notice that on my return trip home, eastbound traffic on Montauk Highway between Eastport and Westhampton appeared to be inordinately higher than it usually is for a summer Friday at this time of day.

The train was 55 minutes late at Speonk and could not take on any passengers. An LIRR platform person placed many of the passengers on a school bus that was brought in to take them to Babylon. Although it appeared that a handful tried to squeeze themselves onto the train. Others opted to wait for the 2:05 Speonk to Babylon train.

I'd never seen a 'double-stop' done by a train before. I live off the Port Washington line. Usually, the conductor will tell passengers to walk up to the cars that actually platform. Thanks for this video! It was great!
@jkrspecnet3 ай бұрын
They do it on the Cannonball with its 12 C3 cars to expedite passenger exits. It’s easier and quicker to reposition the train rather than have people trying to fight their way forward through up to 6 possibly very crowded cars. However, on a 10 car train, such as the Friday afternoon “Advanced Cannonball” they have people in the rear two cars walk forward to exit. Also keep in mind that only Westhampton and Southampton are 8 car platforms. The rest of the South Fork stations have 6 car platforms.
@ron234halt3 ай бұрын
@@jkrspecnet Ah, thanks for the extra info! Happy trainspotting!
@jkrspecnet3 ай бұрын
I should add that LIRR has only one named passenger train, e.g., Train 16 the Cannonball. Summer Friday afternoons Train 12, the 1:08 PM train from Hunterspoint Avenue to Montauk, is often referred to unofficially as the "Advanced Cannonball". However, unlike Train 16 Cannonball, Train 12 usually operates with up to a maximum of 10 rather than 12 Kawasaki C3 bilevel passenger coaches and is almost always powered by 2 EMD DE30AC locomotives rather than 2 dual mode DM30AC's. Train 12 also stops at Jamaica to take on passengers, and on the East End unlike the Cannonball it also makes stops at Hampton Bays and Amagansett.

Nice to see you again for another season. Do you know if the LIRR has any plans to replace the C3 cars or the EMD locos any time in the future? Aren't they 25 yrs old now?
@jkrspecnet4 ай бұрын
They probably have "plans" on paper, but thus far no firm action or commitment. Example: Metro North is about to get the first of its new Siemens dual mode locos, but LIRR was not part of that purchase deal. And, yes, the C3's and EMD locos are now over 25 years old. So they keep on limping along with bandaid fixes to their diesel fleet.

I know it gets busy during memorial day, july 4th, and labor day. But does this train gets busy the rest of the summer?
@jkrspecnet4 ай бұрын
Not so much any more as it was before COVID. At least that's the way it now appears to me, and others. Perhaps now, because it is still early June, weekend travel to the East End may be dependent on the weather forecast for the June weekends. July and August weekends may once again be very busy and crowded because the forecast is calling for a much hotter summer than the past few years. Another possibility s that people are traveling on the earlier morning and afternoon trains. Today the morning train to Montauk was operating 15 to 20 minutes late because of the high passenger volume.
@cats01824 ай бұрын
Just doesn't seem to have the hubbub as before the pandemic. Know they got rid of the Hamptons Reserve Service. Also thought there was talk of no longer allowing standees on the train. Have watched these videos for a couple of years now. Every Friday night seemed to be "over-busy". Whole thing now just lacks something in atmosphere.
@jkrspecnet4 ай бұрын
You are absolutely right. It's totally different now, post-Pandemic and post-Hamptons Reserve Service. However, I am sure that Friday June 28, and possibly also the Wednesday July 3 train, will have large crowds. We'll see.
@rpm2night4 ай бұрын
I think it’s definitely time for the railroad to consider reimagining the Cannonball. Maybe lease cars that are more appropriate for long distance travel, or allow a private company to offer their cars with the LIRR crews either still operating the train, or piloting a third party crew. Reserved seating should be brought back, as well as some sort of drink and snack service.
@cats01824 ай бұрын

@neboul4 ай бұрын
Oh ok the train is longer than the station. I saw that on your previous livestream and I didn’t get it. Thanks Jim 😊
@jkrspecnet4 ай бұрын
In the case of the Cannonball, yes. Westhampton station raised platform, and also Southampton station raised platform, were designed and built to handle up to 8 Kawasaki C3 bilevel passenger coaches maximum at one time. Most of the time the LIRR diesel trains are a maximum length of 8 C3's with 2 DM or DE locomotives. A few Montauk summer trains operate with 10 C3's. Cannonball is an exception, operating with 12 C3's plus the 2 DM locomotives. Rather than have passengers in the rear 4 C3's walk forward through several cars to exit the train, it is easier and quicker to move the train forward to allow passengers to exit directly from those cars, hence the term "Double Stop". In the past (pre-COVID days) many conductors would do what I call an 8 and 4 split, e.g., they would open up the first 8 Cannonball cars, then pull the train forward and open up the rear 4 cars. But it now seems to be exclusively a 6 and 6 split. This would make sense to do it the same way for all the East End stations, since Bridgehampton, East Hampton, and Montauk, are each shorter 6 car platforms.
