This seems like a very inefficient way to solve the problem and has a few gaps. I'd suggest creating a new table with a distinct list of Student ID and Student Name and call it dim_student. Then create another table with a distinct list of Class ID and Class Name and call it dim_class. Then from the Student table create a new table with only the Student ID and Class ID columns call that fact_enrollments. Join the fact_enrollments table to the original Class Table filtered where student ID is null and append that to fact_enrollments. Add a column to the fact_enrollments table and set its value to 1 where there is both a class ID and a Student ID are populated and 0 where either class ID or Student ID is null. Now with these 3 tables dim_student, dim_class, and fact_enrollments we can measure several things from the number of students in each class, average class size, average number of classes per student, as well as students not enrolled in classes, and classes with no students enrolled. We can also produce class rosters and student class lists. The tables are normalized to optimize model size. If the model is extended a bit with class date and time on dim_class and enrollment date on fact_enrollment we can produce class schedules and other analysis including semester planning and enrollment history. Essentially the core of a Functional Data Warehouse. Better yet communicate this model to upstream Data Engineers and build a proper analytic platform. In my opinion a good Data Analyst should be not be settling for "Work arounds" with clunky data (no matter how "Clever"), but acting in their clients best interest to improve and refine the data estate.
