For pve I recommend a battleaxe or nature staff, for pvp the build from this video. I myself used this weapon in the beginning. by the way, I have a zero to hero video with a battleaxe so you can watch and try the same build

10:10 its battleaxe, mage cowl, mercenary jacket, soldier boots and as offhand i use torch in begginning and Muisak. For cape you can use thetford, avalonian or undead

I just like the torch better. A shield would work too, but I prefer a torch because of the attack speed that can help with mobs, and I don't like the threat generation bonus from shield.
