Awesome stuff, Made a year around green house out of hemp here in central Oregon. Was able to survive 20 below freezing pretty easily with just 1 heater. Plan on using geothermal and or sand battery for future builds. Would love to try a dome next. Love the stuff and it is the future no doubt. The fact it is fireproof as well is underrated especially in my area where fires are a yearly occurrence.

I have always wanted to build a dome house out of Willow here in the UK. Hemp seems to be quicker grower and a more sustainable resource yielding more than one product from each grow.

How much to make this one?
@coachscottblack7 күн бұрын
@loftninefivefour4611 the cost estimate depends on several factors, such as how much DIY you do vs hiring someone, how elaborate you make it, where you purchase the items for it and etc. That stated, I have the estimate for the one in the picture. The labor cost about $61k and the materials cost about $140k Furthermore, that one was created by a professional builder and they did not look for inexpensive alternatives items to build it. But, another way to look at this is while I'm building mine (starting in about 2 to 3 months) I'll be doing most of the work myself to keep the labor cost down (I'm hoping to keep labor cost between $10k to $15k) and I'm going to try to keep the materials cost down to $80k to $90k. These are all estimates but should give you a general idea. Thanks

I have lived in community for the last 11 years and we host Woofers. If I were to start over again I would become a barber, a cook, PCA (personal care assistant) and a massage therapist and wolf a few rounds around the planet. Those are skills that allow one to make extra money while travelling lightly and endlessly. Extra points for those who get educated in irrigation, sweep the floor, look after babies and is willing to be self motivated to get shit done. I have been working on creating a Food Forest in our 3.5 acres and life in community can work really well. There is a wave of people moving in the planet through Wolfing.

The main problem with geodesics is that they’re not tiled and must be perfectly continuous. This gives rise to similar problems with flat roofs, which always fail over time compared to a sloping tiled roof due to expansion/contraction. Any progress with this? I love geodesics as well btw an would like to see a solution.

Ive seen the new radian milled timber kits. I think they are a great and logical first step towards mainlining hempcrete domes, but they are a mistake in terms of scalability and popular reach.
@coachscottblack25 күн бұрын
Yes, you are correct, our sign team is currently looking at ways to enlarge them. For now though, the way we increase the size for people who want them larger is by either a) adding a second dome either a tiny dome or normal size then connect them with a hallway or b) add extensions to them just like you would a regular home. In terms of strength of ours, they can be rated to withstand a cat 5 hurricane force. And yes you are correct they are best for hempcrete build, the geodesic structures did not work out for us.

I was excited to find your video because I've wanted to build a geodesic hemp dome for a long time. But what you're showing in the video is not geodesic??
@coachscottblack29 күн бұрын
Correct, our domes are ribbed domes. After research I found that these were better for the hempcrete version that I wanted to build.

Interested in small apartment no balcony garden. What is your opinion on stacked container indoors?
@coachscottblackАй бұрын
Containers are ok but grow towers are better. The tricks to apartment gardening are 1) making sure you have enough light either direct sun minimum 4 hours but the more the better. You can also purchase grow lights those work well. 2) adequate water, both towers and containers dry out quickly, so running an automated drip line is best otherwise you'll drive yourself crazy Watering everyday. Lastly, it's always best to start your seeds in a seed tray before putting them in the towers or containers success rates of germination are higher when using a starter seed tray

I love your ideas for finding alternative ways to save money. The educational route is ingenious. However, shouldn't the architectural plans be from a licensed architect?
@coachscottblackАй бұрын
For the most part yes, but you can get students to do the work and a certified architect can review and approve our disapprove then sign it. This is standard practice for many and works well

In this type system plastic pipes often melt if not protected from excessive heat. Yes, this system works GREAT until the clouds roll in but that is why you have a large holding tank. And yes, plastic pipes will melt in the winter too because water will get boiling hot on clear winter days.

Great advice!
@ab-ym3bf2 ай бұрын
Have had such a system for about 10 years, and it was brilliant. Unfortunately due to high calcium content in our water it started to leak, and became unusable. As it was rather expensive the costs were equal to conventional systems that have the advantage of supplying hot water even after 3 days of clouds. Looking in to getting the parts replaced (mainly the holding tank) so I can start using the system again.

Scott, I wanted to build a community center with a Hemp Dome structure to showcase sustainability within the community. Any guidance for cost and do we need a slab foundation?
@coachscottblack2 ай бұрын
Thanks for reaching out, I'll be happy to help, contact me on what's app if you use it at 8482481394 and we can discuss in greater detail the cost. In terms of foundations, that will largely depend on local code, But in general domes can be placed on concrete slabs, stilts, and large wooden decks. It will also depend on where you are located. Lastly, I have two options, I have a standard sized unit and a tiny unit. Contact me for more details. Thanks
