The key reasons why sand is preferred over other loose materials in this method are: Uniform particle size and shape: Sand particles are typically small, rounded, and uniform in size. This allows the sand to flow and pack consistently, providing a reliable displacement measurement. Free-flowing nature: Sand flows freely and does not stick or adhere to surfaces like some soils can. This ensures the sand can easily displace the soil sample when poured into the hole. Non-compressibility: Sand does not undergo significant compression when poured into the hole, unlike some soils which may compress and change volume. This maintains the accuracy of the volume measurement. Availability and cost: Sand is widely available and relatively inexpensive compared to specialized equipment or materials that may be required for other soil density measurement methods.
