I'm 58 and I just started getting back into shape 2.5 months ago. When I started, I was #268 and could only do 2 push-ups. I'm at 232 now and can do 18 at once. I got to 15 fairly quickly but adding more now is pretty challenging.
@SilverStrengthFitness10 сағат бұрын
Hi Robert, Sounds like your doing well with your program. Congrats on the weight loss and increase in pushups thus far. I weighed 235lbs a few years ago. In 2023 I decided I needed to get under 200lbs. I noticed once I dropped that weight my pullups and pushups numbers increased. Maybe it's the same for you. Once you lose more you will jump up in numbers again.

Have been at it for 35 years ,71 years old now and work out sensibly 30-40minutes every other day , not a bodybuilder. The older you get the easier to injure yourself. I have reduced dumbbell weight and intensity but enjoy working out no matter what. Do not overtrain, end each session eager to keep on going. If you wear yourself out you will end like most people who join a gym and after two or three sessions just quit. I have a small gym at home and do a little every now and then even at 2-3 am if can't sleep.
@SilverStrengthFitness10 сағат бұрын
That's solid advice. Thanks for saying that. If you workout at 2am are you able to sleep afterwards? I am noticing lately the amount of weights I do is starting to tire me out constantly. I am thinking of streamlining things and maybe including a variety of calisthenics and db work. Diet seems to be becoming more and more important as we age.
@jjsifo17 сағат бұрын
@ I used to work nights as a maritime surveillance pilot , thus the waking up at night issue.Sometimes after a session and a quick shower I get some sleep but not always. I am using a combination of weights and bands,for years I underestimated those bands .I use the tubular kind of dark ones but started with the colored ones , as long as you attach them to a solid point, you will not go flying out the window (haven't one fail yet) but you get a good workout with those things.Just do what you like and it will stick with you forever , being weights,bands , some like going to the gym , just do what makes you feel best and as for diet I avoid sugar and if I gain a few pounds I just eat less ,,like these holidays ,I have to lose 10 lbs. KZbin has a lot of videos and programs, mix them up and develop your program or routines but make it enjoyable just so you look forward to the next session.A bunch of weight at this age could be counterproductive so careful there.

You are the perfect weight for you and that’s that. As a survivor of restaurant toxic food poisoning (pesticide carelessly spray ed onto the food) which shut down my gut and I was quickly starving to death and the doctors were worthless to help me, the 40 lbs. of lost weight (from a trim robust 180) this loss was stopped by wise friend who said cut out everything but meat and eggs. Thank God this stopped the 4 months of diarrhea and dysentery! Slowly working out as per all your superb coaching and please know how very GREATFUL that I am because you CARE and INSPIRE ME to keep it up. Good tip, thanks. I got a few small things for Christmas. One was an old school wrist rope roller. You put a plate or more on it and turn the handles as the rope turns and the weight raises, then you reverse roll the handle so the weight lowers. Did that make sense? I try to do compound movements when possible only to save myself time. It gives me the general body shape I want, slightly less muscular than a gymnist, without needing more isolation moves. So I flex rear delts and upper back together, upper pecs and front delts together on an incline bench.

Standing works. How many times a week are you doing this? I try to exercise every muscle twice a week.
@BloozguyКүн бұрын
Interesting rear delt move.... I might try that next week. I never critique anyone's style or routine, because it's always better than doing zero, and if you like, you'll do it, and that is all important. It's a lot different than mine, but that's why I like watching what other people are doing. I love doing OHP, barbell, not really very strong at it, (currently can do about 80lbs for 6-8 reps...at age 60, {10 years ago}, could do seated bb press for 5's with 150 lbs, lol...ah well), but if feels good, and it allows me to get cups out of the cupboards without hurting, lol. I've struggled for the past 2 decades or more with left shoulder issues, doing stupid sh**t, lol, but ah well... Many paths to glory for sure. Good work, inspiring. I'm currently doing shoulder/chest together, ONCE/week... super setted... and heavy... ....so it's OHP press/superset with flat flyes...it's really great for the stretch ...I love how that combo makes the upper body feel......then, slight incline db bench presses/supersetted with barbell shrugs...then some face pulls on the lat pulldown machine...once in a while some side delts. ...all heavy sets of six...except higher rep shrugs...don't ask why, lol.. I haven't posted any workouts in months, going have to toss a couple up. Thanks for the inspiration!

@@SilverStrengthFitness So, thanks. I'm an on/off trainer. ...been that way for decades, but now trying to stick to it, 'cause well...the writing is on the wall now, lol My best bench years ago in my 30's was about 250 lbs for sets of five. Not a big guy, about 5'9" ...on a good day, lol...about 174lbs or so. Not very strong, but strong enough. Arms were about 16.5" ...plenty big enough then....now smaller & weaker as expected. I'm doing a sort of modified MAX OT type of training.... I'll leave that to you to learn about it. Basically, heavy sets of 4-6 reps.... ONCE/week. Lots of rest is best. I can get strong (well, relative to me, lol) fairly quickly on that... IF>>IF>> you hit it hard enough, at 70, you will definitely need 6/7 days. I've tried doing every 5, but no. You have to mind your CNS, and general overall recovery. Most people quit on the heavy and give up when it gets hard.... you MUST push it! A few years ago was trying the Russian Bench press routine...3x week... killing myself to get a measly 185, lol...left shoulder killing me. Took some time, off, did some various rehab type things for it.... got to a clean 200lbs earlier this year, NO pain. It's just harder ...much harder to get stronger now. For a good solid 15 years, I could always bench press at least 240 for 1 rep, even with a few years off.... not no more... injuries...laziness...etc take their toll. I'm in good shape for 70, not world class, but better than most I encounter on the street. The other people in better shape are at the dojo's and KZbin channels, lol Can work just as good as anyone 50 at work, or even better. You find what works for you and go for it....I still like sets of lower reps....and, battling psoriatic arthritic knees, 1/2 right bicep(long story), baker's cysts.... sore wrists/left shoulder but I persist. I just wrap it all up tight and go for it, lol.... but, I feel great, definitely not 70... I sometimes think it should be illegal to feel this good at my age, and no, it's not luck or genetics...it's good diet, vitamins and strength training! Good luck, keep up the good work. Consistency wins the day....don't ever quit! (Fellow Canuck here too...Essex County Ontario) If I make any more progress in a few weeks, I'll post some workout videos....last one I did , I think was in June, of me doing db. bench presses....I think, 80lbs for 4, almost 5 reps? Down to 70's now, lol....nice chatting with you.

Not too sure about this. Seems to me that quantity is not that important. Pushups engage the core also. Like possibly slow it down and do 3-4 sets of 15 deliberate reps. Concentrate on form or varied hand positions. Or a sets of 21's for example. And maybe push-ups to finish to chest day. Not the start. Just my novice opinion.
@SilverStrengthFitnessКүн бұрын
Thanks for the comment and suggestions. This video was just me knocking off some reps. I do like the idea of using them to finish off a workout. Could also do a set to warm up the chest then 1 at the end to finish it off. Actually doing chest today and going to try that. Thanks for the idea.
@cowtownflyer7874Күн бұрын
@SilverStrengthFitness I see lots of videos stating do 100 pushups everyday and.... Or do 100 sit ups everyday and....But the reality is, if you set your hands to form the diamond, you might not make 10 pushups. So to me, the quantity is irrelevant. Incline pushups, decline pushups and other variations. Like nobody says, how many deep knee bends can you do, right? It doesn't make sense.
@cowtownflyer7874Күн бұрын

Hello there. I'm 65. I started exercising at home beginning Jan 1 / 24. This because I realized I had lost basically all muscle tone. I'm 5'11" and weighted about 175lbs. So pretty thin. Anyway, it's hard to establish a good routine. I was working out everyday. But while I lost any body fat I had, I felt weaker. Muscle tone, but not really stronger feeling. Somebody said I was over doing it by not giving the muscles time to recover at my age. So now I try to take 1 day off, 1 day on. I think it's working better for me that way. I also don't want to injure myself in any way. So I'm pretty careful not to get over zealous. I'm just using moderate free weights and a bench.

I guess everybody is different. I note you combine chest and back. I prefer back and shoulders. You dislike core exercises. I love doing slow and deliberate crunches. It's kind of interesting. I still lift the same amount of weight as when younger and still same number of reps but fewer sets. I take 2 days off after each day's partial body workout, sometimes 3 days off if my energy is too low. You also do all the walking and other exercises which drains you even more. @SilverStrengthFitness Yes I did see the Biceps workout vid. I had injuries in my shoulders and bicep tendons few years ago because I pushed myself too hard. Since then I nursed them back to better shape, not completely back to normal but I modify the workouts so less joint stress. I've also worked out since my teens as you have. I enjoy it, it's a lifelong activity. I found that when I was young it took a lot of effort to make progress, when older it takes much less effort, I think it's because the muscles already have a preset foundation, so keeping them the same or better doesn't take much.

Mr. Silver Strength, I just found you a couple of days ago. I am a 74 year old retired school teacher of 39 years and a retired varsity football coach of 45 years. I started lifting when I was 15 years old and have pretty much lifted steady since then. I love your no frills channel and your no non-sense approach to lifting.❤️🙏🏻🎄

@gregwonhoff7161 hi Greg, fantastic to meet you sir. You had a long career. Obviously something you loved. Thank you for the kind words. Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄

@ Grant, thank you for the nice response. Loved teaching/coaching? You are so right. I certainly did. I just finished watching your latest video about what you do as far as workouts go. I am finding that the older I get the less time I want to spend lifting. I am now working out every day of the week. I am riding the exercise bike for 30 minutes on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday followed by stretching. On Monday-Wednesday-Friday, I start with 30 minutes of biking. I then do my lifting for around30 minutes followed by stretching. I am a bit over 5’10” tall and currently weigh 194. 4 years ago, I was down to 185 and would like to get there again, but I just plain sit too much. Anyway, thank you for being here for us, and Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.❤️🙏🎄

@gregwonhoff7161 sounds like you have a good workout routine in place. I like the idea of less is more. Especially now that I am getting older. I enjoy working out but don't want to spend hours a day doing so. I like your time frame of about an hour. Then a person can do other activities. I am starting to lose some weight beginning the 26th or 27th. Keep in touch if interested and we can throw ideas off each other. I lost over 35lbs in 2023. Once I figured out what was working for me the fat and weight just dropped. Merry Christmas to you and your family 🎅🎄🎁

65 and working 50 hours a week? You definitely love your job. That's fantastic. Glad your feeling better now. I cracked ribs as a teen and to this day there are moments when they bother me. Glad to have you aboard. Cheers.

Squeezing the dumbells in the middle at the top of flies is great for an isometric, but, yes, otherwise we are not under tension throughout some of that part of the ROM.

Good for isometric but hurts my shoulders. I have shoulder issues. Thanks.

Got myself a massage gun for my sore shoulder and a blood pressure monitor. Both at good price and quality from Lidl. Greetings and blessings to all from the UK. Wet and mild.

Sir , do u have any video on pull up in your channel ? I am very much fascinated about that exercise 😊 because I can not do even a single Rep . My forearm (Radio bochealis ) muscle is not very strong , I think . Lat pull down , australian pull up , seated cable row , bent over dumbbell row and t bar row , these all I can do but not a real pull up without band or assistance . If u have time then please do make a good video on pull up for beginners. 🙏❤️

You should try the ER20 Routine. Over and done with in 25 minutes with all " counting reps" being effective. A pump.on its own is not necessarily helping growth. You need to chalke ge tge muscle. Nuce job though eithervway
@SilverStrengthFitness3 күн бұрын
Never heard of it. I might have a look. A pump let's you know you are working the muscle intended.
@zeti4963 күн бұрын
@SilverStrengthFitness the pump means its working g but does not always result in growth. ER is for effective reps, basically find a weight you can just do 12 reps on, do 12 as an" ignition set" once you've done this rest 15-30 seconds then aim at getting 20-25 reps. As you tire and fail, rest for literally 30 secs then go again. It means you may only get say 5 reps at a time but all are effective. Normal.3x10 has it's place, but in these it's only the last ones that are hard that Chalke ge the muscles
@SilverStrengthFitness3 күн бұрын
@zeti496 why do you feel the need to point out the growth thing? Did I mention something in the video? I am not a fan of the 3x10 sort of routine. I did it for years and wish I had learned sooner. Especially if you keep using the same weight for the same reps.

Curious as to why the slight body lean forward for this exercise but not for the bicep curls
@SilverStrengthFitness3 күн бұрын
I feel this one better when leaning forward. You don't have to. I just found it hit this one better when i tried that. You could do bicep curls leaning forward as well, but, if you have any back issues it might be a problem. When doing Biceps you use a bit more weight. Remember, this is a channel for older adults for the most part. Did that make sense?

I am 65 yrs old and weigh 74kg, therefore im not a big man. Been doing weights since I was 16. I can do 3 sets of 21dips, 3 sets of 15 chin ups. I can bench press 100kg for 2 reps , squat 3 sets of 10 reps with 110kg. Barbell curl 3 sets of 6 reps with 40kg , Overhead press 3 sets of 6 reps with 45kg... I train heavy with low reps and focus on full movement. This is how I try to maintain muscle with age, together with a high protein diet.
@SilverStrengthFitness3 күн бұрын
I got a workout reading that, lol. Sounds like you have a great plan. How much protein do you eat per day?
