I was sent a review unit of the MaxTalker TK-W60. I have been unable to figure out exactly what it is because it does not resemble any of the Chinese handhelds out there. It has no FCC ID at all, so after a review of the reception and UI functions, it went back in the box. In fact the literature and box have no branding at all on them - just a computer printed sticker and barcode with MaxTalker printed on it.

In your harmonic test, how does that translate into performance?
@KC4NWK
@KC4NWK 22 күн бұрын
Thanks for the question. Any spurious emission can rob from the total output power. When you measure your output power with a watt meter, you are seeing the sum total output power of the radio on all harmonics/spurious emissions. In most cases, you will not lose very much power from your fundamental frequency, but the power output on the spurious emissions can be high enough to interfere with other radio services such as first responders etc. This is the main reason for having a clean radio for me.

Thank you for your excellent review...! As a new aspiring HAM, although I keep hearing about the "chinese junk" from older HAMs, I am inclined more and more towards the newer better and improved HTs from China, such as the H3, as they represent a tremendous value for money... I was considering getting at some point a "good" HT, but I cannot honestly see the point to spend 3-4-5 times as much to get the "same" VHF-UHF functionality (simplex and repeaters use, no APRS etc...just the simple stuff)... 73 from Athens, Greece!

I agree with your comment. There are many things that make the "good" radios different from these lesser priced radios. The double-conversion super heterodyne receiver is one. They are generally more suitable for applications requiring high sensitivity, selectivity, and dynamic range. The direct conversion radios are obviously less expensive to manufacture. The "good" radios generally also have more features like APRS, and possibly digital modes like DMR, D-Star, Fusion, etc. These "cheaper" radios are great for people entering the hobby, or having a radio you can use without worrying too much about what happens to it. As long as your use is limited to analog communications, they are hard to beat. Welcome to the hobby! Thank you so much for the view and the comment! My wife and her family are 100% Greek. :) 73s!

@@KC4NWK thank you for your very informative reply! Indeed, the HT quality is directly related to one's needs... Having said that, Chinese brands like Wouxun are already cutting into the superheterodyne niche, albeit at a higher price range than "cheap chinese radios", but still competitive vis-a-vis Japanese brands... Overall, like all things, I hope the competition in the end of the day, benefits us with better, less expensive HTs to use! 73s and kalimera to your wife! :)

What difference does it make the radio has an FCC aproval and it doesnt matter what you think about it.
@KC4NWK
@KC4NWK 29 күн бұрын
LOL, well unfortunately a lot of people think that same thing, and they are also wrong. The FCC ID on these radios has NOTHING to do with whether they are a good RF transmitter and legal according to Part 97. If you were to look at what that FCC ID certification actually is, you would notice its mainly Part 15B and one test on 15C (This is for the Bluetooth). This certifies the device doesn't interfere with other electronics. Here is the link: fccid.io/2A4FBTD831 Or the main FCC website: www.fcc.gov/oet/ea/fccid Grantee Code: 2A4FB Product Code: TD831 You can read through each test and see exactly how the test was conducted and what the results were. I do not know what dBc is here. Decibels celsius? lol. I did a quick search... decibels as related to a carrier? So I'm pretty new at all this. I got my technician amateur radio ticket this past January so I'm quite novice. But -12dB is... 4x less? So about... half of one watt? That actually seems like a lot. That's higher than low power on my little FT1XD. The other harmonics will likely not even reach the end of my coax... but that first harmonic at 293MHz is a doozy. If I'm not mistaken here. That is a lot of power that could be focused on my fundamental frequency, Baofeng. EDIT: I need to do this with the baofeng I have. Their QC is pretty loose from what I undertstand. Who knows they likely vary from radio to radio.
@KC4NWK
@KC4NWK Ай бұрын
Thank you for viewing and dropping the question! :) Yes, dBc is dB from the Carrier (or fundamental) frequency. The FCC requires these radios to have their harmonics more than -40 dBc and also each individually below 25 uWatts. Some people don't seem to care too much about this, but I like to present everyone with the data so they can make an informed decision on what radio to spend their money on. Why buy a dirty ILLEGAL radio, when for a very similar price their are choices that are legal and clean. Keep in mind that when you measure your radio output power with a watt meter, you are measuring the total amount of power out of the radio, not necessarily all that power is on your fundamental frequency. Hope that helps!! Happy to have you here, and I hope you are really enjoying the hobby! 73s
@adcraziness1501
@adcraziness1501 Ай бұрын
@@KC4NWK It does not help that half of their customer base truly does not care, and actually pokes fun at people who do want to minimize interference. I don't want to output half a watt into 300MHz. I'm not licensed on those frequencies and I do not want to say my callsign over those frequencies. The common idea, I think, is that they don't travel more than "a few feet" but half a watt is half a watt. And you were testing on low power too, high power is what 5x this? So you'd be putting out 2.5 watts into that first fundamental on high, if I'm reading this right? Into frequencies you don't even know who uses them. I know I don't know who uses 300MHz. A very brief google search suggests "aeronautics, satellites, and radio navigation" none of whom I want to be saying my callsign to. They can. Millions of others can but my radio is going back to the big A and I hope they ask why.
@KC4NWK
@KC4NWK Ай бұрын
Just for clarification purposes, here the 2nd harmonic is ~12dBc from the carrier. If you round your output power to 2W then your 2nd harmonic power would be around ~ 0.125 watts. You can look up the equation for power ratio. It’s a little hard to try to write the equation in a comment. Power Ratio = 10 to the power of (dBc/10). In this case 10 to the (-1.2) power. This equals 0.063. Multiply the power ratio times the original wattage: 2 * 0.063 = 0.126 watts. You can also approximate by the every -3bB is half the power… since -12dBc then half the power 4 times: 2W -> 1W -> 0.5W -> 0.25W -> 0.125W

@KC4NWK
@KC4NWK Ай бұрын
Thank you so much for the comment! I don't honestly think there is much difference at all in the quality of components. On all of these radios they use basically one of two options for the "radio on a chip." They vary slightly in what microprocessor they use. I think its just down to taking the time to try to make sure the radios meet a certain specification before they leave the manufacturer. TIDRadio has definitely shown that they listen to users comments and concerns. They have continued to make rather regular firmware updates to address things that users have found, such as Mic gain, added receive frequencies, etc. The TD-H3 has the same radio chip as the Quansheng UV-K5(8) or UV-K6, but the microprocessor was a little more difficult to reverse engineer. @nicsure is doing some GREAT work on custom firmware for the TD-H3 that will hopefully have it doing similar things in the future as the various custom firmwares for the UV-K5(8)! It isn't very intuitive on how to use it, but I messed around with it a bit, and was able to get some of those original low-output power radios up to "spec." There is a problem with the software and if your serial ports are numbered too high, but it is possible to get it to work. There is also another youtuber (@nicsure) that "modified" the executable to fix the issue if you want to download his fixed version. I have no reason to distrust him, but use at your own risk. Here is the link to his video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJiYqXZ6dtKpbMU He is also working on an amazing software package for use with the TD-H3!!! @@KC4NWK Thanks for yout thorough reply. I have tried both nicsure (actually I am using his altered firmware in most of my devices) and the PowerTune software (original and nicsure's). The latter shows the same values for all bands of the "low power" device as in the normally working devices. I played in the rahe of 25-50 for the lowpower parameter and up to 130 for the midpower. The highpower is not counted by the H3s as I have read and the value there is 255. When you were fiddling with your low powered device which ranges did you alter and which values did you select? I will give it one more try if you provide me with your experienced results. My instinct says though that the output power amplifier is the issue. I downloaded from nicsure the schematic that TIDRADIO provided to him, identified the KC251 as "Q1" in the scematic. If you click on the scematic, each component provides extra info (i.e. Reference description, Reference type, Part description, PCB Decal and Value). For Q1 provides the following extra info: HTU7G_SOT89-E1. Google didn't provide much feedback, but definitely more than searching for KC251. Thank you in advance for your any help!
