That car was two doors from the house I grew up in. Got to wash/detail it. The license plate for those 40yrs. was a blue cali plate, Jeff C. Pretty neat gt350. Great history.

The whole "threat to Corvette" thread is pure BS, as anybody who knows anything about GM can tell you, but noobs buy into it all the time. Maybe these folks could explain away Pontiac and Saturn debuting two sports cars that almost looked alike at the same time? Or how the Firebird and Camaro were in the same customer quarter - but the Camaro was there first?

Jack Humbert assisted JohnDeLorean in designing this car. Humbert was Pontiac's Chief of Styling and Design from mid-1960 for the 1961 models, to the 1977 models and the 1981 Firebirds He took over that position from Paul Gillan, who designed the 1960 Pontiac, and was DeLorean's right hand man.

All the v-8 blocks from 326 to 455 were the same. A 455 with factory 3-2 barrels would have slipped right into this two seater just fine. Even if it were an all steel body, which I doubt, it should come in under 3000 lbs. This was 1964 and the car was waaay ahead of it's time is why it was canned before the public got their eyes on it. One of the independent kit car companies out there should scarf up this design and make them again.

As a Pontiac collector Its sad concern over Corvette sales took away so many great cars such as the Pontiac Fiero was canned in 1988 not due to fire or bad sales... but the 2.8 L V-6 with the WS-6 package and getrag 5 speed 87-88 GT Fastback version were cutting into Corvette sales big time and the car was not made after 1988! due to much pressure from Chevy!

GM did sell this. It's the C3 Corvette. It's a branding issue when GM decided to use Chevy instead of Pontiac. Chevy was already known for selling high end sports cars. And if Pontiac produced this, what would happen to the Corvette, an already established and high selling model? Is there another reason for GM to have done this? I think there are multiple reasons, but the branding and sales issues look like the most compelling one of all. $ talks.

wrong this was 1964 Corvette didn't come out with this Mako design until 1968

Well, they both are 2 seaters and if you stand a few hundred yards away, they have a similar general shape...and that's about the end of similarities. The Banshees were mockups. Production chassis would have been uni-body. That wasn't even started. I truly like the simplicity of the Banshee. Like 4 seat pony cars, it would have used a lot of sedan parts wrapped in a small, shapely form. The Corvette OTOH, is packed full of unique pieces and "sophisticated" features. This makes the Vette kind of a PITA but it's part of the elite image/content that GM wanted for their flagship. GM did not want their 2 seat sports car to be common and they had no interest at all in putting giant engines in the tiniest car possible. You might recall there was going to be a production Grand Sport Corvette in the 60s but it was snuffed as well. If it was a conspiracy, it wasn't anti-Pontiac or even pro-Corvette. It was the belief that flooding the streets with cheap, lightweight, psuedo racecars would not be in their best interest.

The only reason it was a threat to the Corvette is because it would have sold for alot less and the Pontiac engines were better than what was found in the 'Vette (My opinion). It used mostly off-the shelf parts (Tempest) which kept the price down. Could you imagine this thing with a 455?

The 1965 GT350 SFM5S487 had a rear spoiler with remote trunk release and 1/4 windows, over axle traction bars and front mounted inside vehicle under spare tire shelf, rear suspension travel limiting straps around axle housing up to subframe. supposedly came with 48IDA carbs too but were stolen off vehicle along with heads from first owner. the steering wheel had an AC emblem in center. horn button was a sprung toggle switch on dash. radio was AM, rear fiberglass deck shelf.
