Kissy Suzuki was played by Japanese actress Sayo Inaba. There’s not much information about her on the internet. She has 11 credits on IMDB which start in 1983 and end in 1992. They include “Jackanory” (5 episodes), “The Killing Fields” and “Star Cops” (4 episodes). I watched “Star Cops” and remember her being in it. Ando the police chief was played by Burt Kwouk, who wasn’t Japanese, but was born in Warrington to Chinese parents. I thought that having him in it was a nice touch as he played “Spectre 3” in the “You Only Live Twice” film. Jarvis & Ayres would do the same thing in 2014 when they cast Joanna Lumley as Irma Bunt in their radio adaptation of “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” as she’d played “The English Girl” in the film 45 years earlier. So, two out of three main Japanese parts were played by Asian actors. The exception was Clive Merrison as Tanaka. The faux-Japanese accents reminded me of “Monkey” and “The Water Margin” somewhat. This may not be a coincidence as Michael Bakewell who wrote the script and directed the play also worked on the English dub of both series. He also co-wrote the script for the BBC Radio version of “Lord of the Rings” and was married to Joan Bakewell.

Fair enough - I was of course overwhelmingly thinking of Clive Merrison, an actor I of course knew very well as Sherlock Holmes and therefore found his portrayal of Tiger a little odd, even back in 1990... Interesting that you mention Monkey and Michael Bakewell in conjunction with The Lord of the Rings. I'm certain, then, that you're well aware that Monkey and Pigsy were voiced by the same actors as Legolas and Gollum on the radio - though of course Peter Woodthorpe had also voiced Gollum in the animated film, which in turn links to the animated Watership Down since their Aragorn/Boromir double act shared voices with the very similar heroic-antagonistic duo of Hazel/Bigwig. And then there are the other voices in Watership Down who had been in the Lord of the Rings radio play, completing the circle...
@simoncurry5336Күн бұрын
@@MysticalMagpie-wo5fn For what it’s worth I found Merrison’s voice peculiar too. However, I thought Kwouk and Inaba were speaking with stereotypical oriental voices as well. That’s something that I think Burt Kwouk did throughout his career, because when I heard him in interviews he had an English RP accent with a mid-Atlantic twang, the latter may be because he went to an American university. If we’re not careful we’ll be playing “drama connections” all day. However: Burt Kwouk also narrated “The Water Margin” & some episodes of “Monkey” (the ones that weren’t part of the original BBC run); David Collings also did voices for “The Water Margin”; Michael Graham Spice (Bigwig and Ralph Bakshi’s Boromir) was also Boromir in the BBC Radio version; Toshiyuki Nishida (first Pigsy) became Japan’s greatest living actor; and Masako Natsume (Tripitaka) died of leukaemia at the age of 27 & I think her husband was Japan’s greatest living poet. I think the BBC Radio “Lord of the Rings” is the definitive adaptation of the book. It’s the closest to the book, has the best music and the voice acting is superb. E.g. the only person in the Peter Jackson films that was as good as their analogue in the radio version was Andy Serkis. And I’m listening to your KZbin channel because of the BBC Radio “Lord of the Rings” is what got me into radio drama.

It's definitely a classic - Angela Carter specialised in these things, and you'll find a few more of her fairy tales on the channel... This particular one has quite a history - The Company of Wolves was originally a radio play, which Carter rewrote as a short story... then she developed it into a film... and then finally this radio adaptation is based on the short story.

@MysticalMagpie-wo5fn5 күн бұрын
Good question. This is a full-cast dramatisation in four episodes from the 1980s which is why its shorter than the readings of the first two books I've got on the channel (the first one is Out of the SIlent Planet, if you missed that). From what I remember, BBC7 produced these readings but didn't do the third book because they had this older adaptation of the story available.

I wonder if they chose the name mrs Wilberforce because the film was made in Wilberforce road, off the Caledonian road in north London. The house was a prop and behind it you could see kings cross station.
