I'm Swiss, born in 68, and i can tell, that some songs i've heard here, somewhere they were played, maybe in Stores, or whatever it was, for example 47:12, 52:25 , 38:55 ...love those tunes - great ! I'm missing that swinging kind of Big Band Sound today..

It is very difficult to explain the concept of 'West Germany' to anyone under the age of about 50, at least; of course I don't mean the post-War/Cold War historical/political entity but rather the sensibility surrounding that concept. For us in the then so-called 'Free World', West Germany simultaneously meant 'WEST Germany', ie; OUR Germany, but also the 'REAL' Germany, the legitimate Germany. If someone said, "She's from Germany' or 'He's German' that automatically meant West Germany. West Germany was for us chic Braun appliances and BMWs. It meant the groundbreaking architecture of the Munich Olympics. It meant a certain technocratic flourish of the Wirtschaftswunder (and even the leftist reactions to that in the Baader-Meinhof gang and the films of Fassbinder and Wenders). No one ever referred to West Germany as 'The Federal Republic of Germany' - that was for postage stamps, moments of journalistic exactitude, and the abbreviations on the TV screen when Olympic medals were handed out [ie: FRG versus GDR]. East Germany, the DDR, simply WASN'T Germany, but rather an alternate 'Germany' - this Marxist-Leninist place where people spoke German and smiled less than Russians. Beyond high design and technology West Germany was rarely associated with good taste (there was always a whiff of the awkward about it, of the kitsch...of extremity...the sex shops and shows of Hamburg and Bavarian everything, ski resorts and international spy thrillers. even now I'm failing miserably in my attempt to describe it all so elusive a sensation it is...I guess you just had to be there (in time) to understand.

Why was Muzak always given such a derogatory reputation after the era in which it thrived? Insipid, bland, uncool; soft, smooth, painless; ersatz, unintrusive, uninvigorating, etc. And yet - and yet - in this new era of crypto and legalised drugs and social media and rampant consumerism - in fact, in this time of dreams and dreaming and longing and yearning and spending and getting - isn't Muzak the IDEAL ACCOMPANIMENT? It is unreal music for an unreal epoch. Musical therapy for a world that is fearful, faithless, and ambivalent.

Gosh, this is so good. It sounds just like the department store, hotel lounge, airport, and elevator music we heard everywhere as kids from 1968-1978 or so. It brings back fond, sunny memories of shopping with Mom, picking up our aunt from Hartsfield, meeting dad at work for lunch, or taking the elevator to wherever, right in Atlanta when it was safe and beautiful. Cheers!
