Hi, it’s a low D whistle made by Colin Goldie ( listed on website as tenor D whistle)They are a top end make , handmade and very expensive.If you want a more affordable but good sounding whistle have a look at Phil Hardy from Kerrywhistles playing their Kerry Optima low D ( non tuneable version about 70 euros at time of writing if you buy it direct from Kerrywhistles ).I own one of these.Tony Dixon and James Dominic are other whistles in that price range you might want to check out but I have never played their low D although I own whistles by them in other keys .Their lower whistles have a softer sweeter sound which seems to characterize PVC whistles as opposed to aluminum ones

Huh, someone watching in 2019?? Thanks Matteo. I have long since sold the drones (kept the chanter). AFAIK Kenny doesn't do C sets now, but I have seen and heard some of his C and B sets and have been impressed. Maybe a bit functional designwise, but, hey, that's what counts, right? Have fun.

Ive just played the bottom note on my Bb whistle and it comes out as Bb. I tried playing an easy tune - Dirty old town on my Bb whistle playing the same notes as I do on my D whistle. It didnt work. Whats gone wrong?
@silbenklempner
@silbenklempner 8 жыл бұрын
Sorry if I wasn't clear. Of course, the bottom note on a Bb whistle will sound as Bb. What I tried to get across is that when you learn tunes from sheet music you should ignore the different keys altogether. So-called "transposing" instruments (e.g. whistles, clarinets, saxophones, brass instrument) take sheet music more or less as tablatures, so that the same note on the staff is always played with the same fingering, no matter what note actually sounds. This might be confusing for someone with a background on piano or guitar. I know what I'm talking about, I used to play piano in a swing bigband: "You, Mr. Trumpet, please play a Bb there! "Yeah I'm playing Bb, conductor". "But you play flat". "Oh, you want me to play C?". "If this results in a proper Bb, then yes!":)

Beautiful! have been learning jigs and reels so this quiet haunting tune would be a great change I have bourght a Bb whistle and would love to try this tune. I have music score in D for it but not Bb. I'm not too good a transcribing yet so I wondered could you please let me have the music notation in Bb for this tune. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
@silbenklempner
@silbenklempner 8 жыл бұрын
sue, just ignore the fact that you have a whistle in Bb. Just play as if it were a D whistle. That's the way whistlers do it. The bottom note is always D, no matter what key the whistle is in. No need for transcribing. You get it? Good.
